Cremation has taken place and a family memorial service will be held at a later date this Spring/early Summer at the cemetery in Peetz, Co. His church family has held a memorial service for him at his church. Mt Moriah Newcomer & Freeman Memorial Home In Kansas City, Mo is in charge of arrangements. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mtmoriah.net for the Steinbrecher family.
Greg was born June 23rd, 1964 in Scottsbluff, NE to Howard & Delores (Dee) Steinbrecher. He went to Westmoor Elementary School and while attending first grade, Greg came down with the chicken pox, then became gravely ill with Reye’s Syndrome. At the time, he was one of only 200 known cases, and became one of less than ten survivors. He spent 61 days in Denver at the University Medical Center, in a coma for over three weeks, and required over 70 pints of blood. He was dubbed the “miracle boy” by many. This resulted in Greg having to have a tracheotomy, and subsequently resulting in him having a trach until he was 19 years old because of the scar tissue. He was never able to swim like other kids, but he never complained. That was not in Greg’s character. All of Greg’s life, he was happy-go-lucky and good natured, and always with a smile on his face. Even upon being told of his passing, his current Dr said how sorry he was, and that he was such a “kind and gentle man”, adjectives often used of Greg.
Greg graduated from Scottsbluff High School and went on to technical school in Sidney, NE. Upon completion, Greg moved to Kansas City. Greg loved living in KC, developing new friends, a new church family and following the KC sports teams, especially the Chiefs. Greg found employment with a local grocer, the “Hen House” in 1991 and was employed there for over 32 years, until his passing. He was a long-time active and very devoted member of Cornerstone Community Church. Greg enjoyed fishing, bowling, movies and all church activities.
Greg is survived by his mother, Dee, of Scottsbluff, his sister, Lisa Keller, (Kevin) who “could beat up anyone who bothers you, up through the third grade” upon his return from the Denver hospital, sister Cheryle Hefner (Wes), brother Terry Steinbrecher (Lynette), sister in law Carol Crain, nieces & nephews Christa Crain, Nathan Keller & Colton Keller, Connie (Jeff) Dunham, Kelly (Tracy) Shaw, Jeff Shaw, Kelly Steinbrecher, Stephanie Smith, Matt (Danielle) Crain, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Greg was preceded in death by his dad Howard Steinbrecher, sister Debbie Crain, and brother Steve Crain.
