

Hazel Raley, 99, of the Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore, Missouri died September 18, 2011 at the Foxwood Springs Living Center following a brief illness. She was born November 30, 1911 in Hudson, Illinois to the late Ezra and Sylvia Walston Farrell. She attended Hudson High School graduating in 1926. In December 1928, she married the late Roy Huffman. In July 1949, she married the late Clifford Raley. She lived and worked in Virginia, Connecticut, and South Carolina although most of her life was spent in the Central Illinois area. In 1944, she purchased the Colfax Variety Store re-naming it Hazel’s Variety Store. Later she was employed by State Farm Insurance, Barton’s Construction, and worked at Bloomington Livestock Commission Company for twelve years. Hazel was a member of the College Avenue Baptist Church in Normal, Illinois where she was active in several groups. Later she was a member of the Raymore Christian Church. She was a member of the Colfax Rebekahs, Bloomington White Shrine, and a fifty year plus member of Keystone Eastern Star where she proceeded through the Chairs and served many years as a Grand Lecturer and Instructress. Always one to keep busy, Hazel spent many hours handcrafting afghans and other items for family members and various charities. Hazel is survived by two daughters Esther (Bob) Wertenberger of Raymore, Missouri, and Olive (Del) Swearingen of McKinney, Texas; six grandchildren James (Robyn) Morris of Smith, Alabama, Kim (Brad) McPeak of McKinney, Texas, Lisa (TH) Haltom of McKinney, Texas, David (Evie) Bielfedlt of Plano, Texas, Julie (Tom) Pitzenberger of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Tony Wright of Independence, Missouri. Eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren further survive her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Huffman in 1954. Memorial services will be held in Bromwell Lounge, Foxwood Springs Living Center, Thursday, September 22, at 9:00 a.m. Funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. The Reverend Brett Winters, pastor of Raymore Christian Church will officiate. Entombment will be at Mt. Moriah Cemetery following the funeral service. Relatives and friends are welcome at the Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
