Together they had a daughter and a son, Kim and Hoyt. Hilda had three grandchildren: Irena, Ada, and Parker, all of whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, both parents, Margaret and Bill Schulthess, sister, Marjorie Kirkpatrick, and brother, Bill Schulthess. She leaves behind her children, Kim and Hoyt, Hoyt’s wife Amy, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Hilda became a registered nurse at St Luke's Hospital, then gained her Bachelor of Nursing at KU Med, and finally her Masters of Nursing at UMKC. Hilda worked at various hospitals throughout Kansas City until 1986 when she began working for the Kansas City Health Department where she largely worked with underserved pregnant women. After working for the Health Department, she joined the Penn Valley Community College nursing department, where she was an OB clinical nursing instructor. Throughout her nursing career Hilda’s expertise was in OB, often working in the Neonatal department. Hilda was a life-long caregiver always looking for ways to help others.
Hilda loved to travel. She traveled all over the United States, Europe, China, Australia, and Central America. One of her bucket list destinations was the Grand Canyon, which she finally was able to visit in July of 2022 with Kim and Irena. She also loved music and enjoyed listening to her favorite artists Neil Diamond, U2, Hauser, Wynston Marsalis, and many classical composers. Hilda and Leon enjoyed going to musicals, symphonies, and plays together and were frequent patrons of the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and Starlight Theatre, among others. Hilda also loved art and was an accomplished painter herself. Lastly, she always had a positive spirit and could find the good in just about anything. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to The American Cancer Society.
