Sam was married to Mary Shockley on October 11, 1964. They were married for 53 years until her passing on November 15, 2017. He is survived by his children: Darryl (Valerie) Shockley of Denver, CO; David (Lexye) Shockley of Savannah, GA; Denesha Snell of Kansas City, MO; sister, Irma Johnson and five grandchildren: Adam, Johari, Darius, William and Selena.
Sam was born on September 7, 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Ms. Eddie Hinton Shockley. He was raised by his mother and grandmother Ella Richardson Hinton. He attended Horace Mann High School with the Little Rock Nine, who desegregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957.
Sam moved to Kansas City, Mo at 18 and enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 19. He was stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Northern Maine. Here he learned the trade that would carry him through 33 years of employment at Trans World Airlines, where he was one of the first three African-Americans hired at their overhaul base in Kansas City. After retiring from TWA, Sam ventured on to a new career as a pastor after graduating from the Shepherd School of Ministry at age 55. He went on to lead the Way of Life Sunday School Class at Graceway Church for 15 years.
Sam loved traveling, reading, sports (especially baseball), music and making new friends. His life revolved around his faith and it was the thing that he informed everyone he met every day of his life. Sam was a servant of God and had a powerful influence on everyone who knew him, both believers and non-believers alike. His family remembers him as a strong, honorable man who lived and loved as he believed.
Visitation for Hinton will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 followed by his Celebration of Life at Graceway Church, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut off, Raytown, MO 64133. Honors and Committal will be at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 BLUE RIDGE BLVD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64133.
