He graduated from Parkwood High School in 1974 and obtained his master’s degree in political science from The University of Nebraska in 1977. In 1983 he graduated from UMKC with master’s degree in law and passed the Bar exam his first try in June 1983.
He worked as Prosecuting Attorney for Kansas City for several years then went into private practice and specialized in bankruptcy, traffic/DUI, criminal and domestic law cases. He also was a Hearing Officer for the Board of Equalization for several years.
He was actively involved in scouting all his life. He earned the title of Life Scout. He was an adult Scout Leader for Troop 255 and 763. He went to H. Roe Bartle Scout Camp for many years. He was an Honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He went to Philmont Scout Ranch with all 3 of his sons. All 3 of his sons attained their Eagle scout.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rexford P. Hoyt and Oletha Bell (Mills) Hoyt; and his oldest brother, Daniel Hoyt.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Shields) Hoyt; his children, Joel Hoyt, Jason Hoyt, Jake Hoyt, and Megan Speaks; and his grandchildren, Kayla, Lilly, Phoebe, Ana, Caleb, and Allie; his siblings, Roger Hoyt, Ken Hoyt, and Shelley (Hoyt) Kneeland.
Howard had many hobbies. He loved to travel, visit the National Parks of America, gardening and genealogy. He was a collector of Roseville pottery, toys, match box cars, comic books, and pinball machines.
The family would like to thank the Saint Luke’s Hospice House and all the nurses and assistants for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in their final days.
A visitation for Howard will be held Monday, March 24, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service which will occur on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. A committal service will follow at 11:00 AM in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
