Hulda Mae Pollman, 85, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020 at home surrounded by her family. Her life will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at The Summit Church, 3381 NW Chipman Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO. The family will greet friends and loved ones from 9:30-11:00 prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mt Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
Hulda was born on January 29, 1935, in California, MO, the oldest child of Herbert and Ruby (Porter) Kusgen. She was raised on a farm outside of town and attended California High School where she met senior Louis Pollman during her freshman year. They dated for two years and married on June 1, 1952. Hulda stayed in school and graduated in 1953. She was a proud military wife as Louis was in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957, supporting him when he was deployed to Korea and at other stateside bases. Louis and Hulda later settled in south Kansas City in 1963 with their three children. She was a stay-at-home mom for several years before beginning part-time work for Macy’s in the late 1960’s – she stayed with Macy’s for many years until it became Dillard’s, and then stayed a few more years! Later she took on full-time work as a receptionist at Midwest Mechanical Contractors in Overland Park and stayed there 17 years. Throughout all this time, Hulda was the consummate mother and grandmother. She was famous for her “Wednesday Daycare” when she and Louis kept all eight of their grandchildren for the day. The kids and grandparents played together, went to the zoo, had picnics, rode behind the tractor, climbed trees and quietly absorbed all the solid family values that Louis and Hulda modeled for their family. They faithfully attended hundreds of sporting events over the years for their grandchildren (Hulda was well-known for her score-keeping!) and were very proud that all became college graduates. Hulda was a Christian and had been a member of The Summit Church in Lee’s Summit, MO for the past 25+ years. She was a volunteer for her church’s Summit Lunch Program during the summer months, which she loved. Hulda enjoyed quilting and diamond dotz beading. She also loved playing Words With Friends on her phone and checking in on her extended family with Facebook posts. (Side note: If she wrote “LOL” on her message to you, she meant “Lots Of Love”) Until the very end of her life, Hulda cherished family time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Hulda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis, her beloved grandson Klint Andrews, and two sisters, Ruby Latham and Nancy Kusgen. She is survived by her daughters Cheryl (Kevin) Atwood and Debbie (Keith) Andrews; her son Wayne (Lisa) Pollman, all of Lee’s Summit, MO; seven grandchildren – Kyle (Lauren) Andrews, Michelle (Ben) Fiedler, Amy (Casey) McCambridge, Jared (Addie) Atwood, Ashley (Matt) Scrogham, Krista (David) Keeler, and Derek (Allison) Atwood; 15 great-grandchildren – Carter, Grayson and Bennett Andrews; Jackson and Lily Fiedler; Chase, Keylee and Kendall McCambridge; Will, Miles and Quinn Atwood; Tenley and Rilynn Scrogham; Maxwell Atwood; and Jacob Keeler. Hulda also leaves two brothers, Dan Kusgen and Ted Kusgen, one sister, Lola McCarty and two brothers-in-law, Rev. Jesse Pollmann and James Latham, and many other extended family members and friends.
Hulda’s family would like to give a special thanks to the Care Ministry team at The Summit Church, to the nurses and aides from Crossroads Hospice, to all those who came to see her during the last few weeks of her illness, and also to a valued family friend and nurse, Annette Gray, who came into Mom’s home and gave us peace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to:
