Irma Naomi (Menkens) Hastings, 80, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Northcare Hospice House. Irma was born on August 9, 1930, to Alice and George Menkens in Clay Center, Kansas. The family lived in Randolph, Kansas, until moving to Bellville, Kansas, in 1935. Irma had a wonderful childhood; one of her greatest loves was her horse, Brownie. She showed Brownie in 5-gaited competitions for which she had several ribbons to her credit. She went to chiropractic college in Wichita, Kansas, and became Dr. Irma Menkens. She married Walter J. Hastings on August 17, 1952, and set up practice in El Dorado, Kansas. After one year of practice, they started a family and had two sons. Irma enjoyed golf and played several on America's best courses. She was a member of St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Kansas City and has many friends who love her. Irma's love for her family could only be matched by the love they have for her. She will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her smile and her courage.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Sonja (Menkens) Heiman. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter Hastings; sons, Greg (Nancy) and Kent (Karen); sister, Judy Menkens; niece, Krissy Dougherty, her husband Patrick and their children Caleb, Maddy and Riley; and grandchildren, Haley, Abby, Gracie and Brent. She was Mutti to Haley and Gracie, and Honey to Abby and Brent.
Visitation will be held at St. Luke Presbyterian Church (4301 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO 64119) on Friday, July 29th from 3:30-5:00 PM. Memorial Service will begin at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Northcare Hospice House or a memorial choir fund in Irma's name at the church.
