Jack was the son of Leo C. and Ruth Bartmess and Kansas City was home his entire life. As a young man, Jack became a contract carrier for the Kansas City Star; although he was involved with the paper route at a very early age. He worked with the The Star until he retired in 2007. He valued the lifelong friendships built around the paper business and felt a responsibility to mentor the young men who worked for him.
Jack married Jane Corbett in 1954 and they raised four children, Linda, Cheryl, John, and Scott in south Kansas City. His wife Jane preceded him in death in 1980. He endured losing his daughters Cheryl (Westphal) in 2004 and Linda (Trokey) in 2019.
Jack found love again and was united in marriage with Barbara Carol Riggs.
He graduated from Southwest High School where he played basketball, and continued to enjoy sports throughout his life. Well into adulthood, he played fast-pitch softball, basketball, and had fun bowling. He and his wife played volleyball together and he loved golf.
Later in life he and Carol operated a lunch café in the Sprint building and then owned Carollee Bread Co. Jack and Carol shared their love of nature and gardening; growing various vegetables and ornamental flowers. They fed and enjoyed most of the creatures that visited their yard, except the deer and raccoons!
"Jackson", as Carol fondly called him, leaves behind his wife of forty-two years Barbara Carol Bartmess of the home, his sons and their wives John (Jill) Bartmess, Scott (Lorrie) Bartmess also Layne Riggs, Scott (Susan) Riggs, and Todd (Lesley Bantle) Riggs.
He was blessed with fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Jack was a Christian and strived to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ every day. We are so grateful to have had his example to learn from. He will be dearly missed.
