

Jama Barbara Truskey Sims, 86, of Kansas City, Missouri died at Holmesdale Care Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2006 at the McGilley Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel on Thursday, January 19 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The family requests contributions in lieu of flowers to the National Federation of the Blind, Kansas City Chapter, 5917 NW Liston Court, Kansas City, Missouri 64151.
Jama was born on June 13, 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas to Elias and Bertha (Bergtholdt) Truskey. She was an inventory clerk for Pyramid Products and later was co-owner and operator of Speedyclean and Shine and JBJ Enterprises for 25 years with her husband, William Campbell Sims. She was also very active Kansas City PTA Committee for the Exceptional Child and helped integrate the Kansas City School District in the 1950’s. Jama helped run the KC Association for the Blind Day Camp and broke ground for what is now known as Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, a daycare for visually impaired youth. So active were Jama and her husband, Bill, that 1978 they received as a couple the Jacobus Tenbrook Award from the National Federation of the Blind. This award is presented to outstanding sighted volunteers in the organization. Jama also taught Sunday School at Covenant Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, Jama was preceded in death by her husband in 2001; and her sister, Nadine Edith Truskey. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and family, Jana Sims Moynihan and her husband, Jim; and grandson, James C. Moynihan; and granddaughter, Jeanine B. Moynihan; and many cousins.
