Jerry Alan McGlone, 59, Independence, Mo. peacefully passed away August 23, 2013 at home with his wife. He was born in Kansas City on January 28, 1954 to James Carleton and Patricia Catherine O’Leary McGlone. Visitation will be 2:00 pm Sunday, September 1st, followed by a “celebration of life” ceremony at 3:00 pm at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 east 47th Street, KCMO. Close friends and family are welcome to gather after the service @ 1720 S. Ann Ct, Independence, Mo for a celebratory balloon launch.
Jerry was a 1972 graduate of Northeast High School where he enjoyed playing football with his brothers and some of his best friends. He was a member of the Debaters Literary Society and would forever refer to himself as the “Master Debater”. He earned a scholarship for his athletics and went on to play football for Washburn University.
In 1975 Jerry hired on at the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. He joined the (NALC) National Association of Letter Carriers and represented his fellow carriers as a union steward for many years. He loved his job and was blessed with the brotherhood that became his extended family. Even after his health declined and he was forced to retire in 2008, you remained in our family and we will always be grateful.
His love of sports led him to play softball for many different groups. In 1985 he played for “Up the Street” and the “Zoo” bars where he met a roving short stop. The inning was over and he came running from the outfield, smacked her from behind with his glove and said “Great play, Carol”. She ran to the dugout and immediately asked her friend “who’s the guy with the great legs?” He always teased “We went out on a date and she never went home”. On November 21, 1988, they were blessed with their first son (surprise!) daughter, a very strong and beautiful Catherine (Catie) Ann McGlone. The son they planned for, Sean Patrick McGlone, would not be born for 22 years in the form of a grandson. They were married on March 24, 1989 and almost a year later on March 30, 1990, their premature baby turned “Golden Child” was born, Amanda Mackenzie McGlone. He said it was poetic justice to have to spend the rest of his life in a house filled with women.
Jerry passed on many legacies to his family and loved ones, which included sports (Go Chiefs!) and music. One of his favorite pastimes was to see who could guess the name of the artist first. 101.1 The FOX was not only the sole radio station in Jerry’s life, but also the “ICE” contact in his phone and the only number on his speed dial.
He also passed on his love of the water. He always bragged that his daughters were swimming “before they could walk”. The family went on yearly float trips and Jerry always wanted to retire on a beach with his toes in the sand and the sun on his face. He loved the outdoors. (His year-round tan was proof of this.) At almost anytime you could find him sitting on the patio surrounded by family and his wonderful neighbors who he considered family.
Preceding him in death were his parents James and Patricia McGlone, his uncles Donald Foster (Old Sock) and Otis McGlone, and his sisters-in-law, Glenda McGlone and Sharon Wyzard.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 24 years, Carol McGlone; children; Catherine McGlone, Amanda McGlone and her future husband Christopher Wilson (His answer would have been yes, son!); Brian Simpson, Jennifer & Jeremy Simon and Michael Henry; aunt Betty Foster; uncle James O’Leary; mother-in-law Betty Ollison; siblings, James and Regina McGlone; Dennis McGlone and Janice McGlone; in laws, Ken and Adonna Ollison, John and Deb Ollison and John Wyzard; and grandson Sean Patrick McGlone, raised and loved as his own; nieces and nephews, Jack and Ingrid McGlone, Candice McGlone, Wayne Ollison and Tara Tipton. He is also survived by the most wonderful grandchildren who will always remember him asking “Are you hungry? Want a knuckle sandwich?” He will always love you Savannah, Cameron, Julian, Gabby, Gia, Bryson, Brianna, Zoey, Maliah, Mason and Sean-Amicci.
Thank you, Jerry, for teaching us that “Moments become memories”. We will carry you with us always!
Let the good times roll!
