

John Dominick Hughes was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 29, 1959 to Charles V. and Ida (Jones) Hughes. He was the seventh child born of 10 children. His parents, all grandparents, 2 sisters, a brother-in-law, and one nephew preceded him in death. John Dominick joined Canaan Missionary Baptist Church (KCMO) and was baptized as a young man and departed this life on January 6, 2012 in Sacramento, California at the age of 52. John Dominick, also affectionately known as “J.D.”, was a graduate of Central High School (KCMO School District), class of 1978. He graduated with honors and was an exceptional trumpet player in the high school band. He attended Kansas University (Lawrence, KS) immediately after high school, however decided to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1980. He was honorably discharged in 1985. He married Shirley Morgan in August 1980, and to this union, one child was born. The marriage dissolved and he later married Cathryn Lawson in 1988. There were no children born to this union; however he was an equally proud stepfather and “Papa D” throughout his life. His latter marriage dissolved in 2000. Stationed in California as an Airman, he remained in the state after his discharge where he established his civilian life. He had always been fascinated with science, especially chemistry since childhood; therefore, he pursued a career as a lab technician. After his military service, John Dominick was employed with Quest Diagnostics (Sacramento, CA) and remained there until his passing. He leaves to cherish his loving memories his daughter, Norissa (Hughes) Hightower (Michael); two stepsons, Stephen Morgan of Kansas City, MO; Matthew Fox, Sr. of Salem, OR; one stepdaughter, Stephanie Walker (Tony) of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren, Aiyanna Hightower (KCMO), Deja Brown, and Alexis Walker (Las Vegas, NV), Matthew Fox, Jr. (Brandy)of Verbena, AL; three sisters, Yvonne Scoggins (Ellis) of Texarkana, TX; Teresa Hughes-Findley of Kansas City, MO; Phyllis Atsangbe (George) of Katy, TX; four brothers, Donnell Hughes, Sr. (Ella) of Blue Springs, MO; Clarence Toby Hughes (Dora Liggins) of Kansas City, KS; Jerry Hughes of Kansas City, MO; and Mark Hughes, Sr. (Joy) of Sacramento, CA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, extended family, co-workers, neighbors, and friends. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd. Interment in
