"Jack," to family and friends, was born October 7, 1933, to Henry W. Niermann and his wife Edna I. nee Krumm at Sterling Colorado. He was received into the Kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on October 22, 1933, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stoneham, Colorado, and was confirmed on May 25, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Alamosa, Colorado.
Jack received his elementary and junior high education at Trinity Lutheran School, Alamosa. He graduated from St. John's Academy in 1951 and St. John's College, Winfield, Kansas in 1953, and from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1959. He did his graduate work in theology at Concordia Seminary, and in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Chicago and the University of Indiana. He was ordained and installed at First Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, Kansas, in August 1959. He was pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bowie, Maryland, from 1960-1962. He also served parishes in Indiana and Wyoming. He taught Classical Languages and Literature at Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1962-1976. He was pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wichita, Kansas, 1976-1998, and pastor of education at Bethany Lutheran Church, Overland, Park, Kansas, 1998-2003.
Jack was an essayist and workshop leader for conferences and conventions. Through research and editing he helped develop material for Stephen Ministries, and was a contributor to Concordia Pulpit. He also served as Reconciler, Circuit Counselor, and Vice-President of the Kansas District, and served on the faculty of the Kansas District Lay Leadership Training Institute.
Jack was joined in marriage to Sally Nielsen on August 17, 1958, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Chicago, Illinois. God blessed their union with three sons: Mark, Tom and Micah.
Jack departed into a servant's peace on September 28, 2023.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Edna Niermann; his brothers Karl and Hank; and his sister Nata. He is survived by his wife Sally; their sons and their spouses and children: Mark and Enrique, Dallas, Texas; Tom and Katie, their son Jack and daughter Livy, Prairie Village, Kansas; and Micah and Nikki and their son Henry, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also survived his sister Janet; his brothers and their spouses, Herb and Cynthia; Tom and Helen; and many other relatives and good friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service for Jack on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 3:30 pm at the Sulgrave Regency Condominium Ballroom, 200 West 49th Street, Kansas City, MO. There will be a Visitation starting at 3:00 pm. A light Reception will follow the Service.
