John was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to John and Lucy Wornall on October 13, 1934. He attended The Pembroke Country Day School, Class of ‘53. He was particularly proud to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. John graduated from The University of Missouri where he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE). Go Tigers! Before returning to college to complete his degree, he served in the infantry (1958-1960).
John enjoyed a long, successful career in the local investment community. He spent his first several years working for Stern Brothers, where he learned his trade becoming an outstanding underwriter of municipal debt. Among the most notable of his skills was his ability to listen to a variety of ideas and reach consensus while making all parties feel respected.
John enjoyed history, reading, solving a challenging puzzle, gardening, making his favorite recipes, caring for family pets, relaxing with a “scotchie-poo,” watching football and supporting Kansas City sports teams, especially the Kansas City Chiefs.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy, and his dear love, Judy Fowler, who passed away in April 2020. He leaves two loving daughters: Robyn Bristow Wornall (Daniel Schwarz) and Leslie Wornall Kostner (Tim); four cherished grandchildren: Lucy Caroline Kostner, Helen Kate Kostner, Sterling Daniel Schwarz, Frederick (Fritz) Wornall Kostner; brother James Frederick Wornall, and his wonderful Wornall cousins.
A true gentleman, John was known for his kindness, patience, positive outlook, amazing sense of humor, and abundant love for family and friends. He was adored by many, including colleagues, devoted caregivers at Bishop Spencer and, most of all, his daughters and their families.
Services were private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City. Condolences may be offered at www.mcgilleymidtownchapel.com.
