Joe was the oldest of eight children. He was a gifted artist who was offered a full scholarship to the KC Art Institute, but he chose instead to join the US Navy at age 17. This began a 13 year career with the Navy, serving honorably in both WW II and the Korean Conflict. Much of this service was as a machinist on hospital ship USS Relief, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After the Navy, Joe had many diversified civilian careers. He was an electrotyper, a foot patrol officer for the KCPD and a security guard for Mercantile Bank. His retirement years were spent traveling and volunteering in various capacities for the Ararat Shrine Temple, logging in over 16,000 hours. Most of those hours were served in the Ararat Shrine Provost. Joe also enjoyed model railroading, his main hobby throughout his life. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha and Rose. Survivors include his two children and their spouses, David and Barbara and Joan and Mike; five siblings, Eva, Margie, James, Rita, and Danny; five grandchildren, Valerie, Jennifer, Cristy, Monica and Melanie and one great granddaughter, Jordyn. David and Joan want to thank the Ararat Shrine Temple for being Dad’s second family and KC Hospice for the loving care provided him in his final days. You are all angels.
