

Katherine Askew, 91 of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away November 6, 2016. She was born in Parsons, Kansas on September 19, 1925 to the late Robert William Mallory Sr. and Ella Mae Mallory. Katherine was the youngest of their four children and through attendance at Morgan Avenue Christian Church; Katherine developed a strong, lifelong relationship with God at an early age.
Katherine was educated in the Parsons Public School System, and decided to further her education by attending Labette County Community College. Katherine later transferred to Pittsburg State College in Pittsburg, Kansas where she earned both her undergraduate and Master’s Degrees in Education.
Upon graduation, Katherine relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where she joined West Paseo Christian Church. She remained active through teaching and attending Sunday school classes, holding various offices and serving wherever needed. A fire forced members to relocate their present Church home. Katherine pledged her unwavering love and support to the service of Swope Parkway United Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). You would see Katherine every Sunday until her health no longer permitted. Even then, you would find her at Church at least once a month until April of this year.
After arriving in Kansas City, Katherine began her career as an Elementary School Teacher with the Kansas City Public School System, doing what she loved until her retirement in 1995. Katherine was a well-respected educator and was loved by both students and colleagues alike.
Katherine met and fell in love with Homer Q. Askew late in life. Homer and Katherine shared true love and were married in 1964. Her life with Homer was filled with love, joy and happiness until his passing in 1983.
From that time on, Katherine resided alone until 1989. She unselfishly and lovingly opened her home to her brother, Robert W. Mallory Jr. until his passing in August 2010. Shortly thereafter, Katherine became a resident at SummitView Terrace until her peaceful passing.
Katherine is survived by her loving and devoted sister, Ovara O. Miller of Kansas City, Mo, sister-in-law; Doris Hicks, Bowie, MD, brother-in-law; Edward Askew, Mattapoisett, MA niece; Deitra Taylor (John Taylor, MD), Hayward, CA, nephew; Tempree (Kai) Hayes, Kansas City, Mo and a host of family and friends to mourn her passing. Katherine is preceded in death by her husband; Homer Q. Askew, Marionette M. Jones (sister), and Robert W. Mallory Jr (brother).
