We had several dogs while my mom lived with me. Nelson, she always complained that she couldn’t put anything on the coffee table because Nelson would knock it off the table when his tail wagged back and forth.  Lucy Goose was her favorite (named after me)She started a tradition in feeding Lucy cheese after Lucy ate, dinner was not complete without the cheese and Lucy thinks it should be a tradition. So every time Lucy has dinner mom will be remembered. 
I put something in the fridge labeled LG for Lucy Goose and my mom thought it was for her Lucille Gill.

During Christmas break, dad and I got grandma chocolates as a small, surprise gift. She was so excited for them and dug right in after dinner. While eating the chocolates, she asked dad “André, would you like a chocolate?” He said no. She then looked at me and said, “Hannah, would you like a chocolate?” I said no thank you. She then turned the chocolate to her and said “Lucille would you like a chocolate? Yes please!!” Dad and I couldn’t stop giggling at that interaction for at least a week.
 While it’s a silly little memory, it is representative of how she always was. Taking care of and providing for everyone else first before herself. She always had a big heart and was always feeding everyone!

About 28 years ago, mom came to visit from Canada.   Carolyn came up from Manhattan.  We had, then 3 yo,  Elizabeth in our room .  At 3 am, Elizabeth woke me up and declared "Mommy, the Grandmas are still at it!"  Sure enough.  You could hear the dice rolling.  They talked and played Yathzee almost all night.

It is 4 a.m., and I can not sleep.  My mind is galloping with memories of mom.  Mom came to a faith and trust in Jesus Christ at a young age.  I truly believe that this faith in Christ is what sustained her all her life.
Mom had a hard life. Born the youngest of 13 in a rural area of Ontario, Canada, life was hard from the beginning.  At 14 years old, her parents told her that she needed to leave home and support herself.  Legally, she had to be in 
School until she was 16, so she worked full time during the day and went to school at night for 2 years.  For having only a 10th grade education, my mom was one of the smartest people that I ever met.  She was a whiz with numbers.
      At 19, mom married an American, had my brother at 20, moved to the USA, and had me at 22.  Mom fully understood the struggles of being a foreigner in a land where she also did not speak the language.  She taught herself to read and write in English by comparing 2 Bibles.  French and English.  I remember her also trying to learn Spanish.  Our father was not a kind man, and when I was 5, they divorced.
      An early memory that I have of mom is her generosity.  We lived in an apartment complex where 8 units shared a common yard.  She was the only mom who worked full time, yet she was also the only mom who took the time for all the kids.  There would be 10 or more kids playing outside, and mom would bring out a big bowl of popcorn, a fresh batch of brownies, or a pitcher of cold Kool-Aid.  Enough for everyone.
      When she was 33, my stepfather bought a farm.  So, we left the rat-race of the LA suburbs and moved to the middle of nowhere in the Missouri Ozarks.  The next few years were a living nightmare.  Sadly, mom did not make the best discissions in marriage.  Divorced and married a third time, but with poor outcome.  She was repeatedly abused, beaten, and hospitalized but seemed powerless to help herself.   But she helped others all the time.

I believe it was to love and pray for others, which she did constantly.  
If she knew you, she was praying for you.  
If she heard of a need, she prayed.
If she could not sleep, she prayed.
If she was sad, she prayed. 
When she was happy, she prayed.
When she hurt, she prayed.
Mom prayed.   She loved Jesus with all her heart and now she is with Him forever.

*when a classmate of mine showed up at our house, planning to run off with her boyfriend, Mom stayed up and talked to them until the small hours of the night.  They were more important than her sleep. 
*When Job Corp girls were bent on rudeness and destruction, mom showed kindness and won some friends.
*When an elderly disabled man could not afford food, she found ways to feed him that didn’t offend him.  When this same man, with only 1 arm, hurt his hand, she had him come every day to clean and dress his wound so that it would not get infected. 
These are just a couple of examples of her love and care for others.  She LOVED people and she would pray for everyone.  She would cry over the hurts of others.  She would stop and pray, right then, when she heard of needs.

      Through the unjust actions of a customs worker, mom lost her green Card and found herself stranded when she went to visit family in Canada.  She had to abandon her job and home here in the USA and start over in Canada with just her suitcase of clothes.  She was 42 with 10 older siblings still alive and all in Canada so it turned out OK.  God immediately provided a job with housing.  Mom was able to visit us in the USA but lived and worked in Canada for the next 37 years.  She remarried and was widowed after almost 30 years.  She became reacquainted with her many siblings, came to know many of her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
      Her health was failing as well as her sight.  When mom was 79 years of age and legally blind, we brought her to Lee’s Summit to live out her life with her 2 children, 7 grandchildren and eventually 8 great grandchildren. 
I think her greatest sorrow was going blind.  Her mind was sharp, and she wanted so much to read her Bible, research, and study.  In her last year or so, she often commented that she wondered why God was keeping her here on earth.
I believe it was to love and pray for others, which she did constantly.

Sweet Lucille is how I remember her. Kind and encouraging. When my parents were alive, we enjoyed Lucille coming to our house for lunch and a game of cards. They were gigantic cards, but you just do what you need to do to enjoy the little pleasures.  I’m imagining her singing those lyrics in the ole hymn “Blessed Assurance”: 
Perfect submission, perfect delight, 
visions of rapture now burst on my site; 
angels, descending bring from above 
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
