Marie K. Tompkins, 98 of Kansas City, passed away on Dec. 24 at NorthCare Hospice House surrounded by loving family. She was born on July 10, 1924 in Osage City, KS, the daughter of Leona Vigneron Larson and CB “Ben” Larson. She graduated from Osage City High School in 1942 and the University of Kansas with a BS in Business Administration in 1946. She met WL “Tom” Tompkins at KU and they were married on July 27, 1945. Married 68 years, they worked as a team in Tom’s career in higher education. Marie was preceded in death by her husband in 2013.
She was a lifelong volunteer including service to St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City Museum, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum as a docent. She was a member of P.E.O. for almost 60 years and a member of Country Club Christian Church at her death.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Margaret Harris of the Woodlands, TX, Emily (Gary) Heath of The Woodlands, TX, Marti (Gregg) Harrison of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Ben (Erica) Harris, Rachel Wynslow, Grant (Jodi) Harris, Page (Jared) Mann, Jesse (Jason) Ayres, Sara Heath; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113. It was Marie’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to St. Luke’s Foundation or Country Club Christian Church.
