Marietta's story began on December 10, 1939, in Independence, Kansas, born to James Theodore and Elizabeth Marcell Flippin. She moved to the Kansas City area as a child and later made her home in Independence, Missouri. It was there that she raised her family and shared 31 years of marriage with her husband, Robert E. Chambers, whom she married on March 6, 1965.
Marietta was the ultimate homemaker. Though she once ran a bakery and served in the PTA, her true life’s work was caring for her people. She lived for family gatherings and took immense joy in making every dessert known to man to ensure everyone was well-fed.
A fierce competitor, she earned the affectionate title of "lucky dog" at weekly cards and dominoes. She absolutely loved to win during family game nights. She treasured the years spent snowbirding in Florida with Robert—even if it meant returning home to the chaotic aftermath of grandkids accidentally ripping a bathroom sink off the wall. More recently, she loved exploring the United States on road trips with her daughter, Dana.
Marietta was reunited in heaven with her parents; her husband, Robert; her brother, Donald Flippin; her daughter, Terrie McDonough; and her grandson, Michael Box.
Her legacy of love and laughter lives on through her daughters, Debbie McDonough (Brian) and Dana Chambers; her grandchildren, Michele Wright (Scott), Cynthia Holloway (William), Anthony Ferro (Kari), Joshua Ferro (Andrea), Christina Box, and Jessica Ferro (Adam); 19 great-grandchildren; and a large, loving extended family of nieces and nephews.
To honor Marietta’s memory, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
