His grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all their friends called him “Buddy”. Growing up many members of his family called him “Junior”. His legal name was Marshall Mace Howard, Jr. Whichever name you know him by, Marshall was always ready to respond to a call with a friendly smile and support.
Marshall was born in Wayham, Missouri, on March 7, 1930, to Marshall Mace Howard, Sr., and Lottie Edith (Chipley) Howard. He graduated from Versailles High School and married Donna Bixler on June 4, 1950. Marshall joined the Air Force and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Following his service in the military, he graduated from Southwest Missouri State (Missouri State University) where he majored in accounting. Most of his accounting career was spent at Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company.
Marshall and Donna loved to travel, and especially enjoyed cruising. Favorite trips included Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. Both Marshall and Donna could be found at all of their daughter’s and grandchildren’s activities. Marshall was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a deacon and active member of Overland Park Christian Church. Marshall also enjoyed reading, country and gospel music, playing cards, and in later years participating in all the activities and trips at Brookdale Senior Living. He also loved watching sports—especially the Chiefs and Royals!
Family members include his daughter Diana McClain and son-in-law Gary, grandchildren Anne Kastelic (husband Zak), Amy McClain, and Nathan McClain (wife Sarah). He has two great-grandchildren, Kaden and Kinsley Kastelic, and two foster great-grandchildren he loved immensely. In addition, he has many loving nieces and nephews. Marshall is survived by his sister, Sally Weekley, and was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Howard, brother Monte Howard and sisters Jenny Hutchison, Hattie Sutton, and Sue Noyes.
Marshall and the family appreciate the wonderful support of Julia and friends at Brookdale. The staff and friends were a blessing, and Marshall loved his Brookdale family and home.
