Martin was born in Henrietta, Texas on August 31, 1930, to F,C, & Virginia Martin Crow. He was raised in Hope, Arkansas. Martin graduated from high school at the age of 15 years old and then graduated from Henderson College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas in 1947. He then attended & graduated from the University of Arkansas with a graduate degree in chemistry in 1949 and the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1957.
Martin completed his general residency at General Hospital now Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He went on to become a Board Certified Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon. He practiced with Doctors McCoy & Chandler for 12 years before co-founding Associated Plastic Surgeons (APS) where he practiced until retirement. He was a gifted and sought out surgeon and teacher. Early in his practice he was instrumental in the founding of the UMKC Medical School Program. He was a member of the Plastic Surgeon Society, and AMA Delegate, President of the medical staff at Children’s Mercy and Research Medical Center. He donated his time and skill every Friday to the Cleft Palate Clinic at Children’s Mercy.
After retirement, Martin enjoyed playing golf, traveling with his beloved wife, family, and close friends. To say he was an avid reader is putting it mildly. In his later years, he became a staunch supporter of the Razorbacks, Horned Frogs, Gamecocks, and the Chiefs. He particularly enjoyed football, baseball, and basketball. However, he was also known to watch any televised sport from one of the schools or local high schools.
The list of accomplishments and recognition is long but too list them would be very out of character for Martin. He was the most humble, loving, giving, loyal, and unassuming person. He was uniquely talented and incredibly intelligent but never touted his own skills. His family however lived by the motto of “Martin is always right.” He could link the most obscure information to any topic and often connect people across the map by their family name or accomplishments. Trivial Pursuit was not a game, it was just the way his mind worked.
Martin is preceded in death by his parents F.C. & Virginia Crow, brother and sister-in-law Neil & Mary Kay Crow, sons Neil Allen Crow & Matthew Coleman, and beloved nephew Neil Ed Crow.
He is survived by his wife Jane Crow, daughter Becky (Keith) Clem, son Lou Crow, daughter Lisa (Mary) Coleman, Daughter-in-law Nina Coleman, grandchildren Alison Clem, Megan Clem, Katie Coleman, Emily Coleman, Ellary Coleman, and Garrett Coleman. And great- granddaughter Clementine Cabe.
Martin was a wonderful husband, partner, father, grandfather, and friend. His quiet manner occasionally gave way to his dry sense of humor. He often amazed his family with the breadth of knowledge. Even as his health declined, his easy going manner and southern charm was evident. His mother raised a gentle soul that forever gifted those who loved him. He will be greatly missed and his memory cherished.
Family will hold a private service in the coming months.
