

Mary C. Flaherty, 98, of Kansas City, Missouri, died on November 18, 2011 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help- Redemptorist Fathers Church, 3333 Broadway, Kansas City, MO. Entombment will be in the Mt. Moriah Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2011 at the McGilley Midtown Chapel, where the rosary will be prayed at 7:00p.m.
Mary was born on September 26, 1913 in Onaga, Kansas to John and Catherine (Grothjan) Flaherty. Mary attended high school at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Academy in St. Mary’s, KS. She earned her nursing degree from St. Anthony Murdock Nursing School in Sabetha, KS. Mary relocated with her sister, Anne, to Kansas City in 1937. She was the head nurse at the General Motors Leeds Plant for almost 40 years, leaving only because of mandatory retirement. Mary was a member of the Redemptorist Parish and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Industrial Nursing Association. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Anne, in 2002; and four brothers, Edward, Bud, Frank, and William Flaherty. Mary’s survivors include nieces, Marilyn Faumce of Topeka, KS and Katherine Flaherty of Onaga, KS; many cousins including Cheryl Rogers and Christine Rogers; and very close friend and caregiver, Ernestine Byrd. Mary will be remembered as a kind and loving person, quick to share a smile and fiercely proud of her Irish heritage.
