Mary Kathryn Huber passed away on September 10, 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri. Mary K. was born in 1925 to William and Winifred Parker of Salina, Kansas, owners of the Independent Biscuit Company. After graduating from Salina High School in 1943, she studied at the University of Kansas while working at Lawrence National Bank to put herself through school. It was there she met returning Army Air Corps pilot Louis Huber, who would become her husband of 58 years. After their graduation with degrees in business administration in 1947, they were married and lived in Kansas City. She worked as a legal secretary at Caldwell, Downing until she began devoting her life to raising her three sons and her daughter while occasionally teaching business classes at Avila College and St. Theresa’s Academy. In 1977 she and Lou, who was Chief Operating Officer of Lumbermen’s Underwriting Alliance, moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where they lived until their retirement in 1988. They then returned to Kansas City and were at home in Leawood. In retirement, they enjoyed cruising to Europe, Asia, Alaska and the Caribbean and cheering for the Kansas basketball team. Mary K. was a terrific cook and knitter, specializing in Christmas stockings lovingly made for all her kids, nieces and their kids. She played tennis and volunteered at the High School literacy program in Florida and at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Nativity Parish after her return to Kansas City.
Mary K. and Lou enjoyed a lifelong friendship with a group of college friends and later adoptees who played bridge and gathered with their families to celebrate significant birthdays with whimsically themed surprise parties. The sound of laughter from those parties, and the sometimes more uproarious “planning parties”, still echoes in the ears of those who were there.
She is survived by brothers William, Jr. and David Parker of Colorado Springs, Colorado, sons Louis Huber III (Joan) of Leawood, Stephen Huber (Cindy) of Bettendorf, Iowa, Robert “Drew” Huber, M.D. (Gayle) of Atlanta, Georgia, daughter Ann Adamson of Leawood, nine grandchildren (three of whom are fourth-generation Jayhawks) and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Redemptorist Church), 3333 Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri, the place where she and Lou were married. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association. alz.org
