

Matthew Paul Wilson left this world Monday, November 29th, 2010 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was born on January 1, 1958 in the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Riley, Kansas. He grew up in the Kansas City, Missouri area. He graduated from Grandview High school in 1976. He furthered his education at Central Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications in 1983. While at CMSU he worked at KMOS radio. After graduation from CMSU he applied for and was accepted at the U.S. Naval School of Photography. After graduation he was assigned to the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk Aircraft Carrier. He served there going around the world twice, until his honorable discharge at the Philadelphia Naval Yards. After his tour in the Navy Matt applied for and was accepted in the master’s degree program at the New York School of Visual Arts. After receiving his Masters of Fine Arts in 1993 he was employed by the School of Visual Arts in the Photography Dept. and was appointed to the faculty in 1997 to teach digital photography. Matt was talented and creative and loved to learn and to teach. He will be greatly missed by his faculty colleagues, students, many family members and friends. He is survived by his parents Sally and Don Wilson, brother Brian Wilson and his wife Jennifer, nieces, nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Matt loved coming back to K.C. for vacations to hang out with family and friends but he also relished his work at the School of Visual Arts and his relationships with many colleagues and friends and family in New York and New Jersey. A celebration of Matt’s life will be held on Saturday, January 8th, 2011 at Broadway United Methodist Church at 406 W. 74th St., Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon with a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. There will also be an informal lunch get together of family and friends in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service.
