Michael Fitzsimmons, age 74, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on April 12, 2026.
Michael was a builder in the truest sense. Over the course of his career he constructed and rehabilitated homes, crafted custom built-ins, and took on the full range of work that a skilled tradesman is called to do. He spent years with Kenny’s Tile, where he worked on commercial buildings, remodels, and projects that required both technical skill and an eye for design. Every job he touched had his signature on it: thoughtful, well-executed, and built to last. His homes and his woodworking were never ordinary. They were uniquely his and those who lived in or worked in the spaces he built knew the difference.
He was not a man who wore his heart on his sleeve. Those closest to him knew that the warmth was there, running deep beneath a surface that could sometimes read as gruff. He loved his children profoundly; showing up, pitching in, and doing rather than saying were how he expressed his love. When a family member needed help, he was there. Not with speeches, but with his hands and his time. He believed fiercely in fairness and honesty, in hard work and plain dealing. That passion was admired by many, and misread by some. But no one who knew him doubted that it came from a genuine place. That was simply who he was.
A faithful Catholic and a man of the outdoors, Michael found peace on the water with a fishing line, in the woods, and in the quiet satisfaction of a project well done. His faith and his principles were the same thing to him; a commitment to doing right, even when it was inconvenient.
He was loved deeply by many. He was, in the ways that matter most, a good man.
Michael is survived by his daughters, Kelly and Katie, and his son, Joseph; his brothers, Tim and Jim; his sisters, Patty, Kathy, Terri, and Joan ; as well as his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Arlene, and his brother, Dennis.
He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church on Friday, May 1st at 10:00 a.m. with mass to follow at 11:00.
