Born and raised in Roeland Park, Kansas, Michael lived a life defined by laughter, connection, and an unmistakable presence. He attended St. Agnes Grade School and Bishop Miege High School before playing football at Fort Scott Junior College and later at the University of New Mexico, where his competitive edge and love for team camaraderie took root.
Michael spent his career in manufacturer sales, where his personality, integrity, and ability to connect with people made a lasting impression. But work was only one chapter of a much bigger story.
To those who knew him best, Michael was the life of the party, armed with an incredible sense of humor and a talent for making everyone feel like they belonged. Rugby was a defining force in his life and identity. He proudly played for the Kansas City Blues and the St. Louis Ramblers, where the game became far more than a sport—it was family, community, and a lifelong brotherhood.
Above all else, Michael’s greatest accomplishment and the source of his deepest pride was his family. He took immense pride in providing for them, supporting them, and showing up in the ways that mattered most. His love for his family was steady, generous, and unwavering, and it shaped the way he lived his life and the values he passed on.
Michael is survived by his wife of forty years, Jackie Cannon Mercer; his children Michael “Kelly” Mercer and Jack Mercer; his daughters-in-law Mollie Mercer and Lauren Mercer; his grandchildren Patrick and Finnegan; his brother Chris Mercer and his sister Kitty Wayne; his brothers- and sisters-in-law; along with many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he loved deeply.
He was preceded in death by his son Patrick Mercer; his mother Dorothy Mercer; his father Jack Mercer; and his nephew John Michael Wayne.
Michael will be remembered for the way he filled rooms—with laughter, stories, and a sense that something fun was about to happen. He showed people how to live fully, love loudly, and never miss a chance to connect. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friendships he built, and the communities he shaped.
The family warmly invites all who attend to come prepared to share stories, memories, and laughter in honor of Mike - just the way he would have wanted it.
