Norma went to heaven through her savior Jesus Christ on December 19, 2022 at the age of 88 years old. Born in Wewoka on Oklahoma July 31, 1934, Norma was the third daughter of Monroe Tyler Bryant and Flossie Pearl Howell. Norma was preceded in death by her sisters Rita, Sue and Jane.
She is survived by her two children: Norma Hackney of Lee's Summit (sons William and Jonathon, daughter Leslie & her husband Nick Sanford) and Cody Brown of Lee's Summit (wife Donna, daughter Eila, sons Cameron, Adrian and Gabriel).
In her early childhood, Norma's family lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa before moving to
Northeast Kansas City, Missouri around the time she was in second grade. In high school, Norma worked at Montgomery Wards where she distributed mail on roller skates throughout the building. In 1953, after graduating from Northeast High, Norma began working at Southwestern Bell phone company in the records department in Kansas City, where she was employed for 33 years. When she was 27 years old, in 1962, Norma married Donald Brown and had two children, Shelly and Cody.
After retiring from the phone company in 1987, Norma began driving a school bus for the Raytown School District. She drove kids to and from school for 9 years before retiring from that job.
A lover of sports, Norma was very active when she was young, playing basketball, softball and tennis on top of being a skilled bowler. She loved watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren perform at school events and was a fixture on the sidelines during their sporting activities. She also never missed watching a Chiefs game!
Norma, her sisters, daughter and grandchildren enjoyed spending time trying their luck at the boats. It's fitting that two days before she passed away, she won two games of BINGO at a family gathering.
Norma lived a long and happy life, putting faith in God, family, and friends first (in that order). She was a selfless and wonderful mother, sister and grandmother who taught her family those same values. Norma – Mom, Grandma – will be missed dearly, but left her family with the trust and peace knowing she is resting in heaven.
A visitation will be held Thursday December 29, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Newcomer's Floral Hills Funeral Home (7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133). The funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM at the same location followed by a graveside service at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens (25203 E. US 50 Hwy, Lee's Summit, MO 64086).
