Norma Jean (Quay) Vogel , age 86, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away due to Parkinson’s complications October 19, 2022 at NorthCare Hospice House with her family and friends at her side singing her favorite song “10,000 Reasons” as she transitioned to God’s arms.
Norma was born January 18, 1936, in Phoenix, Arizona to Hazel Ray (Corley) Quay and Robert L. Quay. Norma had three older siblings who preceded her in death: Dorothy Elizabeth Colabinachi, Robert William Quay and Della Marie McElhone all of Phoenix, Arizona.
Norma attended Emerson Elementary school and was in the first graduating class of Phoenix Christian High in 1953. She attended Pomona College in Claremont, California after graduating before returning to Phoenix to marry Henry George Vogel August 11, 1956. Norma worked as a bookkeeper for the Credit Bureau of Phoenix 1956-1960 and then in 1961 moved with Henry to California, living in El Cajon, San Dimas, and finally in Upland. She devoted her time to being a full-time mother to three children: Kenneth Duane Vogel, John Edward Vogel and Karen Jean (Vogel) Isbell.
For a short period, Norma returned to college in 1982 attending Mt. San Antonio College working towards an AA degree to become a Medical Transcriber. She was a straight A student and a perfectionist with her work. She managed all the financial books of Henry’s business properties and won praises from auditors of how well it was all kept.
Norma’s time was later devoted to watching after four precious grandsons: Ryan, Kyle, Jeremiah, and David Vogel. They were a huge part of her life. Norma sadly endured the passing of her middle son John in 2013. That was followed by a tragic accident in 2014 which permanently changed the course of her life. This led to her 2015 relocation from Upland, California residence of 47 years to Blue Springs, Missouri to be cared for by her daughter Karen, Karen’s family, and close friends. She adored Karen’s Goddaughters Serenity and Paislee, watching them grow from birth and spending time with them daily while their mom Kristl Krogh provided homecare.
Over the seven years she lived in Blue Springs, Norma developed a strong bond with her granddaughter Tori Isbell, becoming best friends. They were in the middle of a quest to read the entire Bible together and continued this during her recent hospital admission. Many evenings she could be found watching Perry Mason with her son-in-law Michael Isbell. She treasured her visits with her son Ken and his wife Audreyn, and kept in touch with her grandsons via Zoom and group chats. Norma always wanted to be a part of every conversation and add her insight.
Despite being wheelchair bound and the progression of Parkinson’s, Norma lived a life of adventure. She was always up for new things if someone was willing to take her. She loved eating out, shopping, and baseball. Recently she was able to enjoy field dugout seats at the Kansas City Royals game. Norma cherished her trip to Walt Disney World in September and tasted all the different foods at Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival. Her love for anything Disney played right into the naming of her new Bichon puppy adopted in March, Tinkerbell.
Norma was a member of Connection Point Baptist Church in Raytown, Missouri. She praised God no matter where she was or what she was going through. Norma was a strong woman and a fighter. She had overcome many obstacles in her life and showed us God through her strength. She was always happy, and her eyes just lit up when she looked at someone. A few days before her passing, Norma had a conversation with God. Looking up to the ceiling she said, “I am ready when you are”. It was the most beautiful thing to witness. She is a light in our lives and always will be.
