Patrick L. Patterson, age 70, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away on December 30, 2025, surrounded by family. Patrick was born on July 7, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, along with his twin brother, Mike, to John and Maureta (Brown) Patterson. In 1962, the family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas, where the boys played baseball and basketball and attended Village Presbyterian Church. Patrick graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1973. He excelled in debate, forensics, and journalism.
Patrick enjoyed his years as a KU Jayhawk and a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda. He received the Best Actor Award in 1976 for his performance in the Rock Chalk Revue production of “The Grinch Who Stole the Bicentennial.” He graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration.
On August 1, 1987, Patrick married Barbara L. Patterson. Their lives were full of laughter, fun, and commitment to each other. They enjoyed traveling, particularly to Maui, Hawaii, but could make even a simple trip to the grocery store a pleasurable and amusing excursion. Patrick loved being a dad to their son Matthew. They shared many adventures, particularly in scouting, riding roller coasters at theme parks across the country, and taking guitar lessons together.
Patrick’s career began with H&R Block in Kansas City, Omaha, and São Paulo, Brazil. After returning to Kansas City, he began his healthcare career at Prime Health and later worked at Health Midwest. In 2003, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) purchased Health Midwest. Patrick transitioned to the new company as Division VP of Managed Care and was then promoted to Corporate VP of Payor Contracting & Alignment, a position he held until his retirement. Patrick served on several Boards of Directors, including the Visiting Nurse Association Foundation, the Advisory Board of Directors of Research Psychiatric Center, and was a mayoral appointee to the Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust (MAST). He was also a Visiting Faculty member at several area universities.
Even though Patrick’s work required seriousness, his personality was far from it. He was known for his quick wit and bad puns. He spoke fluent Portuguese, loved animals, and had a lifelong obsession with music, playing keyboard or guitar in several rock bands from middle school onward. As an adult, he played in a Christian band, The Quick & The Dead, that performed at rescue missions, food pantries, prisons, and churches around the Midwest. For many years, Patrick played in church praise bands at several Kansas City area churches. Patrick was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, where he was involved in the New Day Prison Music Ministry. Patrick loved watching KU basketball, KC Chiefs, and KC Royals games.
After retirement, Patrick became a volunteer DJ at KKFI, 90.1 FM, under the name “Patrick Lloyd.” His “Sunday Morning Musical Mashup” show required weekly preparation, which he greatly enjoyed, given his lifelong obsession with music. He also served on the KKFI Board of Directors and several committees, including the Programming Committee, where he helped develop program standards.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara, of Leawood, Kansas; his son, Matthew, and his wife, Bailey, of Overland Park, Kansas; two beloved grandchildren, Jack and Ivy; his brother Mike and his wife, Paula; his mother-in-law, Verna Seek, and two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Janet and Greg Eastin, and Pat and Tim Powers.
