Randy grew up in Springfield, Missouri where he graduated from Kickapoo High School, playing for their tennis and football teams. He attended Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) and graduated with a degree in business. He moved from Springfield, Missouri and eventually to Overland Park, Kansas to start a 34 year career with Farmers Insurance. Randy made many wonderful friends throughout his time at Farmers and proudly retired at the age of 59. Randy liked his job, but loved his retirement more, as he started counting down years in advance.
Randy is the father of two children, Will and Weston Funk, and in 2010 he met Cheri and their families grew. Their partnership blessed him with another two children, Sam and Shae Salts. They were married on June 20th in 2015. When Cheri and Randy met they had an instant bond, not just between them but turned their two families into one. Randy spent much of his time with his family, including the many times they traveled together. Randy made his way across the US and Europe, all the way from Hawaii to Prague.
Randy's generosity had a positive impact on family, friends, and others in the community by volunteering his time to organize events and coach for his children's youth sports teams. He spent his early years in Illinois where he cultivated a love for Chicago sports teams which he passed down to his children. He was so thankful to see the Cubs finally win a World Series, but it might take his influence from above to get the Bears back to the Super Bowl. He also supported KU sports events while his sons were attending the University and after they had graduated. In retirement, Randy enjoyed spending his free time playing golf, while listening to classic rock, and attending live events– especially the events put on by his sons.
Randy was predeceased by his father, Hal Funk, and mother, Patsy Funk. He is survived by his wife, Cheri Funk, and his sons, William and Weston Funk, and stepchildren, Sam and Shae Salts. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Jana Funk, his stepmother, Kathy Funk, and of course we can’t forget the dogs, Molly and Lily, as well as many wonderful friends.
We will celebrate Randy's life at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home on Saturday, August 19th. Visitation 9:30am to 11:00am followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00am.
