Raymond Franklin "Frank" Huseby was born in Kansas City, MO on August 24th, 1953. The beloved husband of Carol Huseby, loving father to Nikki McMahon (David) and Neal Huseby. Devoted Grandfather to Jemma Jane and Chloe Hope McMahon. Brother to Jeanne McGuire (Jim) and James Huseby (Laurie). He was the fun "Uncle Frank" always full of hugs to many nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his Father; Robert M. Huseby, Mother; Herma Jane Huseby, Sister; Roberta Jane Trowbridge and Stepson, Nathan Hall. With his wife and loving family by his side, Frank went to be with our Lord and Saviour on Monday, August 22, 2022 at 7:30pm from trauma injuries sustained when an SUV hit his motorized bicycle.
When Frank was three, his family moved to a 40 acre farm in Linwood, KS. He went to the Jewett School where he had the same teacher six days a week, as his elementary school teacher was also his Sunday school teacher. Frank started driving tractors, working the farm and learning mechanics in the garage with his Dad and brother through his middle and high school years. After graduating from Linwood High School, as the 1971 Senior Class President, Frank's first paying job was a Gas Station Attendant at the Kansas Turnpike in Lawrence, KS. Through vocational and technical schools, Frank trained and honed his mechanical skills to become a Senior Master Automotive Technician, which became his lifelong calling, career, passion and hobby.
Frank lived in Lawrence, KS for many many years where the family enjoyed summers camping, fishing and swimming out at Clinton and Lonestar Lake. He was known for his big laugh and making even bigger bonfires for the neighbors to enjoy. Frank ran two Amoco stations in Lawrence, where he met lifelong friends who worked with him on race cars to run on the old Lawrence Race Track. Frank also had fun competing in Demolition Derby races at the Douglas County Fair. He was a dedicated father that taught his kids to swim at the Eudora pool, where they surfed on his back while he held his breath going across the bottom of the entire pool. The kids and their friends were always amazed that Frank could hold his breath like no other, underwater. He encouraged them to be brave, try new things and supported them through sports, dance, music and educational goals. Frank loved his children and gave of his time and any resources he had freely and unconditionally.
Frank married Carol, the love of his life, in 2005 where they built a home together in Shawnee, KS and then Riverside, MO where friends and family gathered to enjoy many holiday parties. Frank and Carol enjoyed taking their corvettes to car shows, live concerts, exploring wineries and going on vacation adventures together. In Jamaica in 2020, Frank proudly completed two cliff dives (with Carol filming him), 50 years after his last summer diving at the Tonganoxie Pool. Frank and Carol just loved to be together as "a mutual admiration society of two" they would always say to each other. Frank never missed a day telling Carol how much he loved her and thanked her for loving him.
Frank kept his mechanical skills sharp even after retirement due to health issues, by building model cars, setting up and playing with his slot car track, fixing family and friend's cars and building motorized bicycles. Frank could build or fix anything with wheels and an engine and loved the feel of the road beneath him. Frank and Carol went to many. many races together, meeting friends there and making new friends. He loved the sites, smells and sounds of the track, whether it be Demolition Derby, Drag Racing, Circle Track or Nascar, he loved standing at the top of the stands watching and filming races.
Frank was so excited to become a Grandpa when Jemma Jane and then Chloe Hope came along. He rocked them, sang to them and relearned all the diaper changing and feeding skills from his early years as a father. He just beamed with light when he held his granddaughters. He loved his weekly babysitting gigs and the world revolved around Jemma when she came to stay over at Grandma and Grandpa Huseby's house. He showed her off proudly at church on several occasions.
Frank was raised in the Community of Christ Church in Bonner Springs, KS, where his Boy Scout Troop also met and where he fostered lifelong friendships. Frank and Carol began attending the church shortly after they were married, where the congregation welcomed them with open arms and hearts. Frank mowed weekly at the church as a reminder of his Boy Scout Motto of "Do a Good Turn Daily".
Frank's Celebration of Life Service will be at the Community of Christ Church, 909 Sheidley (off of K-7 and Nettleton) Bonner Springs, MO 66012 on Sunday, October 2, 2022 1:00-2:00pm. The service will be followed by light snacks and an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social from 2:00-3:00pm. Parking is available on the north and south side of the church.
In lieu of flowers, "Do a Good Turn" or pay it forward, as Frank would do but never brag about when he would pay for the car in back of him at McDonalds or help someone fill their gas tank at a Quick Trip.
