Richard was my boss at Bayer. He was the chemist that I worked under as a Tech III. We got along famously, and I felt like I could share anything with Richard. In the short few years I worked with him, I came to feel like he was fatherly to me. Although I knew that Steven was always his favorite, and he always talked lovingly about his real son.

Richard taught me more Biochemistry in a couple of years than all I learned in college. In fact, I still use that knowledge base today in my present work. He also taught me life lessons that I still think about. I was super proud that he was my chemist. Although he simply had a Bachelors degree in chemistry, he had so much science experience that all of the PhD chemists would visit our office to get advice on their metabolism projects. 

I recall an elaborate extraction procedure that Richard had me doing. We were working on a method for extracting one of our organic chemicals from a substrate that I do not recall, but the silica gel columns were producing what seemed to be the full rainbow of colors down the very long columns we had set up under the vent hood. It was so unusual that everyone in the research park was stopping by our lab to see the show. 

Richard also taught me Gas Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. In fact, Richard was instrumental in convincing the big boss that I should be the one to go to the Restek Capillary Chromatography Seminar, and I really hadn't been with the company that long. He had a lot of faith in me.

I will always think fondly of Richard. He was mentor, friend, and father figure to me. I can see him now, at the fancy American Chemical Society dinner, with Turkey Gimlet in hand. Here's to You Richard.

We are also sorry that we had a hard commitment at 6:30 after the service for Richard so we were unable to stay and express our regrets to you in person. It is reasuring to know that Richard loved the Lord and is now in a better place.  May God bless you and ease your grief.

Marilyn, Cheryl and Steve, You have our love and prayers.  We were stunned by the sad news.  Our memories are of times with you and Richard filled with laughter and fun.  We are so grateful for his presence and your's in our lives.  
The service was a perfect tribute for Richard.  We were unable to stay for the reception, but so glad we were at his service.

Marilyn, My prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Marilyn, Cheryl, and Steve... what a wonderful gift of a husband, dad and man.  Thank you for sharing him with us.  I loved his laugh and mostly his gentle smile.  The Freemans, Wears and Odoms love you dearly and pray for God to hold you tightly in His grasp as you grieve.

Marilyn and Family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.  Richard will now be keeping my Richard company and watching over each of us.  He was a wonderful person.

He was an amazing man who was devoted to his friends and family.  He was a great teacher, friend, husband, and father.  I know he will be missed by many, but God danced a jig when he got one of his great ones home!  My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

TheGronberg's lived next door to my sister,  Joyce,  for many years. Jason and Kyle were as much a part of the Gronberg family as Steve was the Mittendorf family! Godspeed Richard! Rich was our dearest friend for the past 50 years.  He and Marilyn, Pat and I would get together almost every Friday to eat out and take in a movie or just hang out together.  Fridays will never be the same and we will miss him so!  He was a true example of the most giving of persons, always a gentleman and ready to lend a helping hand to any one in need.  The epitomy of what it is to be a good Christian!
