

Richard was born on May 2, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles and Virginia Wissel. He had one brother, Charles (deceased).
Richard is survived by his lifelong, beloved friend Dorothy Ellifrits. They enjoyed traveling, attending concerts, and were season ticket owners of both the Royals and the Chiefs for many years. He is also survived by his sister-in-law; Betty Wissel, and nephews; Fred (Kathy) Wissel, Kenneth (Kathy) Wissel, Ronald (Beth) Wissel and Larry (Nancy) Wissel, as well as many grand-nieces and nephews. He also leaves his very special friends, Bill Day and John Butler, who were always there to care for and help Richard every day. They were his angels, especially in his later years.
Richard attended Westport High School in Kansas City. He served in the Air Force from March 30, 1951 through February 7, 1955. He was stationed in Morocco. He had fond memories of his time in Morocco. He was extremely proud of his service in the Air Force. After the service, he had a career as an inventory contractor for Sears until his retirement.
Richard will always be remembered for his constant acts of kindness and generosity that he extended to every person he encountered. Richard has a special place in heaven for his selfless and loving care of his mother, Virginia, until she passed at the age of 100. Richard was an active member at Roanoke Baptist Church, which he dearly loved.
Richard was a man of many interests. He had a gift for recalling facts and figures of all sport venues, both past and present. He loved sports with a passion. He would switch from channel to channel watching many sports at the same time. Richard was an avid collector of baseball cards, stamps, and coins. Richard had an insatiable love of history, as evidenced by his extensive book collection of war histories, both historical and political figures and sports.
Richard will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation will be held Saturday June 29, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. with a graveside service to follow at 12:00 P.M. at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Roanoke Baptist Church, 3950 Wyoming Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.
