

Robert "Bob" B. Atkin, 86 passed away February 6, 2018 from the flu complications. Bob was born December 12, 1931 in Olean, MO, the son of John H. Atkin and Mayme K. (Scott). He served his country in the Navel Air reserves for 8 years. Bob married Ann Atkin in 1954, they shared 63 years of marriage together. Bob B. Atkin retired in 1992 after 39 years of service to Missouri students. A graduate of Southwest Missouri State University, he was in business for a year before he began teaching and coaching at Oak Grave. in 1955, he was named principal of the high school at Oak Grove, a position he held for 3 years.
From 1958 to 1962 Atkin was high school principal and administrative assistant at Rolla, after which he became the district's superintendent. He then served for four years as assistant superintendent in the
North Kansas City District. He was named superintendent of the Raytown C-2 School District in 1973.
Atkin was MASA president in 1989-90. He served on the Suburban Schools Advisory Committee, was state chairman for Federal Relations and was chairman of AASA's Ethics Committee. He also is a past president of the Mid-American Association of School Superintendents and the Greater Kansas City School Administrators.
He worked on numerous state and regional task forces and is active in civic and church organizations. In 1989, he was president of the Raytown Area chamber of commerce.
Atkin has received many awards during his career. In 1990, he was honored with both MASA's coveted Robert L. Pearce Award and the University of Missouri's College of Education Alumni Citation of Merit. On the national scene, he received the John F. Kennedy Award for the Performing Arts in 1987 and was named one of America's top 100 school executives in 1989. An auditorium at Raytown High School was named in his honor in recognition of his years of dedication to the arts and education in the Raytown School district.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, John R. Atkin.
In addition to his wife Ann, he is survived by a son, Steven Atkin, a daughter, DiAnne, a brother, Jerald and two nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held, Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Raytown High School auditorium.
