Robert Lynn Chaffee, 92, died Friday morning, September 22, 2017. Lynn was married to his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn (McHenry) Chaffee, for 69 years. Peggy Lee was crooning "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" in 1948 when the pair married, and the song remained their favorite to the end. Lynn is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and four children: Dale Tillman (husband Kenny), Wendie Collins, Janice Jones, and Michael Chaffee (wife Joann.) He also leaves behind grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to count.
Lynn graduated from Westport High School in 1942 and entered the United States Navy in 1943. After his military stint in World War II, he went to Kansas City University, where he earned a B.A. Having a varied work career, he loved sales and did that well for Chaffee Office Machine Company, Home Depot, Coldwell Banker, and Home Rental Service. He was also successful in management at Seven-Eleven and Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac and the Leeds Chevrolet plant. A passion for flying and building model airplanes developed in the 1930s and stayed with him into the 21st century, as he became a member and treasurer of the Heart of America Free Flight Association. To the end, he remained a loving husband to Marilyn and a loving father and positive role model to his four children. He would eat no stewed tomatoes.
