On the 28th of August,1929, two extraordinary events took place. The Graf Zeppelin flew over Kansas City Missouri, signaling the end of its “Round the World” flight, and Captain Robert Louis McAtee was born.
Captain Robert Louis “Sonny” McAtee, 92, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 20th, 2022, in his home, with his family by his side. His celebration of life will be held at 10am, Thursday, April 28th. Visitation will be from 9am-10am. Burial will take place at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Robert Louis McAtee was born to Rose Marie (Kaberlein) and Harrison Bertle Donovan McAtee, on August 28, 1929. He spent his childhood growing up in Northeast Kansas City, Missouri. After graduation, he joined the Coast Guard, then married the love of his life, Norma Eileen (Gross), on March 3rd, 1951. They blessed us with 62 years of marriage, an enormously large family of six children, and 70 plus grandchildren, great and great-great.
Captain Robert McAtee joined the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, after working several years as a mechanic, in 1957. His career unfolded into a legacy in his 32 years of service with the KCPD. As an Officer, his dedication, and his oath to protect and serve, advanced him through the ranks where he was awarded countless accolades and honors. He ran the motorcades for many public figures, government officials, Presidents, and several politicians when they blazed their campaign trails through Kansas City. He single-handedly pioneered the buy back program with Harley Davidson that covers 38 states, nationwide, and wrote many policies regarding the Motorcycle Cop that are still in place to this day.
When he retired from the KCPD, he went on to protect and serve as an officer for the city of Raytown, Missouri, for another decade.
He lived the rest of his days after he retired from police duty; traveling and being the best grandfather his grandchildren could ask for, while adoring his wife Norma until his passing.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife Norma, son Michael, daughter Terri, and daughter Lori. He is survived by his daughters, Eileen, Kathy and his son Christopher.
