Imagine for a moment your favorite teacher. Whether that teacher remains in your life or resides in your memory, think of that teacher now. Gratefully receive the blessings that teacher brought to your life. If you were ever taught by Sally Shipley, she was the teacher who just came to your mind. It takes less than a day to know a bad teacher, an entire lifetime to know a good one. Sally Shipley was a great teacher.
At Shawnee Mission West High School, Sally Shipley taught speech, theater, and English literature with a quiet authority that carried her students to state and national recognition for academic scholarship and performative talent. Those honors belonged to the students. Mrs. Shipley made certain of that, standing humbly at the side, artfully deflecting her own influence so the student, not the teacher, could receive the acclaim so well deserved. Just ask actors Paul Rudd or Jason Sudeikis, two celebrities who repeatedly acknowledged Mrs. Shipley as the instructor who taught the vitality of self-confidence and the joy of learning as a source of strength in sustaining a successful life.
Sally was born and raised on a family farm in Culver, Kansas. Sally and her older sister, Patricia, were raised by their loving parents, Jack and Glacie McCabe. Sally graduated from Salina High School before earning her bachelor's degree in education at Marymount College in Salina, Kansas. She later earned her Master of Science in Education from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Sally followed her beloved sister Pat to Kansas City, where Pat Persinger joined Ma Bell and built a distinguished career. In Kansas City, Sally met her beloved Walt. They married in 1964, and Sally devoted herself to him until his passing in May 2024.
In a nod to the popular tune, Mrs. Shipley’s students affectionately dubbed her “Mustang Sally” early in her career—a nickname that might have seemed irreverent, were it not for the iconic 1965 Mustang she drove to school each day. Her petite stature gracefully mastered the stick-shift, maneuvering her fiery red car with the same flair and confidence that defined her life. Always impeccably dressed, Sally and her Mustang became a legendary fixture in the school parking lot, admired by all who passed by.
A devoted fan of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Mrs. Shipley embodied her Christian faith not by words, but in actions. Through teaching self-confidence, she healed the sick. Through nourishing the curiosity of her students, she fed the hungry. Through creating a safe homeroom for a first-semester freshman, she greeted the stranger. Never did a harsh word escape her lips—her students, colleagues, friends, and family alike witnessed only kindness and encouragement.
Sally Shipley's prim and proper demeanor concealed a taste for adventure. She and Walt competed in enduro motorcycling, a demanding cross-country sport that filled their trophy shelf with a surprising number of wins. The only casualty any race ever inflicted was windblown hair — which Sally rearranged quickly, consistently, and with the same 1960s signature style she wore throughout the entirety of her life, because for Sally, it never went out of fashion.
A Kansas City resident since 1964, Sally and Walt shared a generous devotion to dogs they rescued and rehomed through Wayside Waifs animal shelter, befriending countless canines over the years and finding each one a home. Sally is survived by one of those friends — Willie — who is already despairing over the loss of the lap where he always preferred to be seated.
Sally Shipley's celebration of life will be held at 10 AM on Friday, April 24, at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113, followed by a reception in the church parlor where friends and family may gather to reminisce and honor her. Sally's remains will be interred alongside her husband Walt, her sister Pat, and her parents Jack and Glacie McCabe at a graveside ceremony in Salina, Kansas later this month.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Sally's memory may direct donations in her name to Wayside Waifs or to the Sally Shipley Scholarship Fund at the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.
