Kay was born on October 31, 1944, to loving parents Blanche (Saye) and Raymond Harris, both deceased. She loved sharing her birthday with Halloween and celebrated it with her signature sense of humor and joy. Kay was a proud graduate of Raytown High School and the University of Central Missouri.
Kay began her professional career with Sandy Inc., a point-of-purchase display company, where she worked for five years. She later spent nine years in sales at the Alameda Plaza Hotel, ultimately serving as Director of Sales. There, she booked conventions for large corporations and organized numerous regional and local meetings. Although the demanding schedule often kept her busy on weekends and holidays, Kay loved every minute of her work and the diverse people she met along the way.
It was at Sandy Inc. that Kay met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Maygar. After four years of dating, they were married on Sunday, August 5, 1973, in the Loose Park Rose Garden, celebrating with music, dinner, and champagne among family and friends.
Together, Kay and Bob were devoted members of Community Christian Church, where Kay served as an Elder and Moderator (President) of the Board. She was instrumental in founding the church’s food pantry, which continues to serve the community today, and also worked on staff as the church’s Wedding Coordinator.
Her creativity and leadership extended beyond the church. Kay served as President of the Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild, and her intricate needlepoint sampler featuring her parents’ home, gardens, and her mother’s handmade quilts, won Second Place and People’s Choice at a national American Needlepoint Guild convention.
Kay and Bob shared a love of travel, exploring the Caribbean, London, Paris, and the Baltic Sea, with memorable stops in Germany, St. Petersburg, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. They cherished the adventure of new places and the joy of shared experiences.
In 2011, Kay was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and through faith, strength, and grace, became a blessed survivor. In 2016, part of her right lung was removed thankfully, it was not cancerous. Her quiet calmness, warm humor, and unshakable faith carried her through these challenges and inspired everyone around her.
Kay’s nurturing heart extended to her beloved family: stepdaughters Jill (George) and Petra; cherished grandson Mac; her nephew Kevin (Rita); nieces Julie (Bryce) and Jacquie (Troy); goddaughter Mary; great-nephews Alex, Spencer (Bailey), and Calvin; and great-great-nephew Jasper. She often joked, “Who needs children of your own when your arms are already full?”
She was deeply grateful for her many friends, especially Barbara, Robyn, and Vickie, whose friendships spanned decades. Kay and Robyn operated an estate liquidation company for many years - a demanding, messy, but ultimately rewarding and fun venture.
Kay loved reading, art, and needlepoint. Her artistic eye and attention to detail reflected her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. She adored her pets her gray cat Nikki and her sweet AussiePoo Aussie who brought her endless comfort and joy.
Kay is survived by her loving husband, Bob.
Per her wishes, no funeral service will be held. A private burial with family and close friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Kay’s name to:
