

Sophia C. "Aunt Sophie" Daskaleas, 90, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on July 5, 2012. She was born in Memphis, TN, January 8, 1922, the youngest of 6 children. She spent her early years in the U.S., and in her adolescence the family moved back to Greece. Shortly after returning, WWII broke out and the story of her family's life took a dangerous and dramatic turn, involving their efforts aiding the underground and culminating in the death of her brother, Jimmy, to save their village. In 1947 she rejoined her family in the U.S., married and had three sons. After the difficulties of her life in Greece, the rest of her life was lived in joy with family, friends, love and lots of food! Sophie's homemade Greek bread and Kourambiedes (cookies) were a staple at every family gathering…OPA! Predeceased: brothers, Peter J. Carter Sr., Nick Carter and Jimmy Clisaris. Surviving loved ones: sister Katherine Georges of Chicago, IL; son Nick Daskaleas, Linda (wife), grandchildren, Demitri, Athena and Ari; son George; son Jimmy, Tammy (wife) and children, Demia, Savanna and Randee Lewis and great-granddaughter, Evalynn; nephews: Peter J. Carter, Jr., Nick Carter and sons, Zachary and Nicholas; nieces: Stephanie Cassandras, Lori Carter and daughter, Cassandra Carter-Trave. Services: Visitation at Mount Moriah, Mon., July 9, from 6-8 p.m. Services at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Tues., July 10, at 10 a.m. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
