Steven Paul Graham

1 septiembre , 19582 junio , 2020

Steven Paul Graham, 61, of Independence, MO passed away at his home surrounded by family on June 2, 2020. A private family ceremony will take place at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church on Monday June 8, 2020.

Steve was born on September 1, 1958 to Peter J. Graham, Sr. and Mary (Albrecht). Being a life long area resident, he attended St. Stephens Catholic School and graduated from St. Mary’s High School (‘77) in Independence, MO. “Didn’t matter if they were a jock or nerd”, they said he treated them equally.

Baseball was a very important part of Steve's life from a young boy to a grown man. His love for the game was passed on to his children and grandchildren alike. He coached a T-Ball team called Stingers which consisted of four grandchildren and seven children of friends from work. They would run on to the field buzzing away until they reached their position. Teams Steve played for included Wilson Stoddard, Montgomery Wards, Sheil Funeral Home and Gateway. Teams Steve Coached included, A’s, McDaniel Excavating, Blackman Funeral Home, Kelly’s Bakery, UNICO, Michel Tech and Stingers. Steve also umpired Baseball games and refereed Basketball games. Friends of Steve who also coached would ask him to talk with their players and give them instruction on the fundamentals of Baseball and life.

Steve (Big Papa) worked for Harvesters Community Food Network. His career with Harvesters began as a driver in 2004. In 2006, he transitioned to Inventory Data Coordinator, in 2010 he began his last position as a Transportation Dispatch Supervisor. Both Steve and his wife, Jo Ann retired from Harvesters in July of 2018.

Steve loved spending time at Mom and Dad’s, it ranged from special holidays to the famous Taco dinners or playing cards. He was loved by many nieces and nephews, when he arrived they were sure to yell “Uncle Deve in the house!” Steve also loved to take his beautiful wife dancing and they could dance!

Steve was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Graham (Cornejo); two daughters: Micaela Graham (Robert McLaughlin) of Independence, MO and Christiana Hutson (Kevin) of Kansas City, MO; four sons: Pete Campos of Independence, MO, Joseph Maya (Seene) of Olathe, KS, Larry Maya (Becki) of Independence, MO and John Maya of Kansas City, MO. Steve also leaves behind his three brothers and two sisters: Peter Graham, Jr. of Edwards MO, Ron Graham of Independence, MO, Cathy Copenhaver of Grain Valley, MO, Karen Greer of Independence, MO, Tom Graham (Anita) of Grain Valley, MO and Dave Graham (Yoli Salinas) of Independence MO. Also left to cherish his memory are 20 grandchildren, 1 great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

The mass will be live streamed and may be viewed on Fr. Kendall Kitterlin's Facebook page.

Graham Family:

I’m very sorry to hear of the recent passing of Steve. Growing up in the same neighborhood (sort of, up the street from the Friday’s), and going to the same Church, Geade School, and High School, I have a lot of memories of Steve and the Graham family. Steve seemed to always have a smile on his face and love in his heart. He was immensely popular and very devoted to his friends and family. I don’t think he had any dislikes and always had good things to say about people. Extremely passionate about baseball and character development. The Good Lord took someone of his caliber way to young. Godspeed Steve....

Steve was the best baseball coach I ever had the privilege to have. He was demanding, stern but fair, pushed us to be better not only on the field but off it as well. I couldn’t have asked for more as a young teenager (really helped mold me and my work ethic into who I am today). Loved seeing him later in life in the stands as he watched, I was always nervous yet excited (much like his grandson) to have him there and give me that grin and nod of the hat! Rest in paradise my friend you’ll be missed! ⚾️

Steve and I went to grade and high school, together. My favorite memories of him include a little reunion on our deck. With many people sitting around chatting, the discussion moved to the best thing about grade school. Steve started by saying his favorite times included his best friend, Jeff Sullivan. I reacted with, "WHAT?" (Since we were all good friends, I thought I would challenge that answer.) He did not flinch. He repeated his comment. It made me smile because loyalty is a hard thing to find . He was dedicated to his friends and his beautiful wife, JoAnn. Thanks, Steve, for sharing such a rare quality.

I remember Steve riding His 10 speed down Newton with a big smile on his face.
We were happy to be neighborhood kids.
He grew up and made his world a better place and leaves a legacy of love and peace and generosity.
I am fortunate to have been his friend.❤️

He was a great man a very gentle man. Always a kind word always a smile. Did not know him as well as I knew his brother Tommy. But every time I see him, I knew where his younger brother, got his personality from he will be missed. By everyone .Godspeed amen.
