The third son of Tony and Willadean Carter and brother to Terry, Ricky (dec.) and Mike (dec.), Stevie was gentle and exceptionally kind to everyone he met. Throughout his life, he impacted others in the most meaningful way: by simply connecting with people. He was a truly authentic person in an inauthentic world, relatable and easygoing.
A dedicated family man and a hands-on parent, Stevie coached sports teams and acted as a scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 10 in Leawood, KS. An avid racquetball player and golfer for many years, Stevie enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to camp, canoe and kayak, and planned many such outings for church groups and his family.
Stevie’s positive disposition and laid-back nature extended to his love of Chiefs football. As a season ticket holder for more than thirty years, you could find him at Arrowhead Stadium during football season enjoying the game and fellow fans, win or lose. He took joy in taking friends and family to the games with him and giving his tickets away when he couldn’t attend.
Stevie spent his early years first in Lake Annette, Missouri and later Western Grove, Arkansas, until moving back to Kansas City after graduating from high school. He held a variety of roles over the course of 35 years at Marion Laboratories (and subsequent companies). He took every opportunity the company provided, including the ability to earn his degree. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 1999 at 40 years old.
One of his favorite hobbies was cooking, something he started to explore more actively during his family’s year in Ireland from 2001-2002. That passion for feeding others extended throughout his life, cooking for family and church events alike.
His time in Ireland deepened his connection to the Episcopal/Anglican church. He attended St Flannan’s Cathedral where he fostered a close friendship with the dean, Rev. Steven White. They spent hours discussing philosophy and theology, comparing Stevie’s fundamentalist religious foundation with Anglican theology and tradition.
With a desire to study theology and minister to people in hands-on, tangible ways, Stevie found his calling attending Episcopal Seminary at Bishop Kemper School of Ministry. He graduated and was ordained to the Episcopal diaconate in 2015 and served as a deacon on staff at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Kansas and then St. Michael and All Angels in Mission, Kansas, where he served until his passing.
More than anything, Stevie treasured his family - his beloved wife, Julia Carter, his four children, Crystal Layne, Jayme Decker, Emily Shipman (dec.), and Paul Carter, He had three grandchildren - Mia Layne, James Decker and Benjamin Decker. Stevie also cherished his role as uncle and great uncle to his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
Stevie felt strongly that he had made it in this world and his life was full and complete. Not one to worry, he was appreciative of every moment and loved others deeply with an open heart that made him easy to love in return.
Services will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 from 2:00-3:00 PM at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Avenue, Mission, KS 66202.
