Sylvia Rose Froeschl Griffin was born November 11, 1922 to Otto and Hilda (Meiners) Froeschl in Kansas City, Missouri. Sylvia was the only child of loving parents. Sylvia passed away on February 25, 2011 at Villa Ventura. She was 88 years old and was surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren, and many prayers. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. James E. Griffin Jr. and her son William Griffin. Sylvia attended Our Lady of Sorrow Grade School, St. Vincent's High School, and Avila College. She worked as a secretary at AMCO Steel before marrying the love of her life, Jim Griffin. They had six children; Dr. James E. (Margo) Griffin III of Tarpley, TX, Pamela (Gary) Kelley of Overland Park, KS, Marica (Jack) Gisler of Kansas City, MO, Bill Griffin (deceased), Chrissy (Rick) Frederick of Shawnee, KS, and Michael (Theresa) Griffin of Leawood, KS. Sylvia also had 15 grandchildren; Christopher Griffin, Rosie Truelove, Paul Griffin, Sean Kelley, Shannon Kelley, Brian Kelley, Casey Gisler, Jeannine Wilkerson, Liz Floro, Aimee Hannan, Andrew Frederick, Eric Griffin, Ellen Griffin, Sarah Griffin, and Angela Griffin. She also had 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. Sylvia dedicated her life to her family. She was the constant friend and guide to all of her children and grandchildren in their journeys through life. She would have Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, 4th of July, and birthdays at her home and the whole family would enjoy summers at the pool and lake house together. She was the glue that held our large ever growing family close. She also had many wonderful dear friends with whom she spent a lifetime playing Bridge and taking memorable trips. Her second love, besides her family and friends, was her volunteer work. When her children were young, she volunteered at Rockhurst High School, St. Theresa High School, and Loretto Academy. She went on to volunteer at Lakeside Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, St. Thomas More School, and Family Workers House Food Kitchen. She was a member and past president of The Lakeside Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of The Catholic Women's Club, The St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, and was a 42 year member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish. She somehow found time to be an avid reader, artist, poet, and beautiful seamstress. She was an extraordinary person who always put God and others first and herself last. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The Rosary will be prayed Tuesday March 1, 2011 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO at 5:00 p.m. A visitation will follow the Rosary from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McGilley State Line Chapel.
