

Thomas Elfter, 82, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born on November 16, 1943, in Lincoln, Illinois, Thomas lived a life dedicated to service, family, and the pursuit of justice.
Thomas pursued higher education with distinction, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a remarkable career devoted to public service and civil rights.
Thomas began his professional journey with the Peace Corps, embodying his commitment to making a difference in the world. He spent his career championing equal opportunity in employment and advocating for civil rights. For 34 years, he served with dedication at the U.S. Department of Labor before retiring. His work left an indelible mark on countless lives and reflected his unwavering belief in fairness and equality.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Thomas was a man of many passions. He had a lifelong love of photography and operated Thomas Photographic Enterprises for over three decades. Through his lens, he captured moments that told stories and preserved memories for generations. Thomas also had a deep appreciation for the arts and supported artistic endeavors throughout his adult life.
A devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Thomas was a pillar of the community at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Kansas City. He was a long standing member of AHEPA, the American, Hellenic, Educational Progressive Association. His faith was central to his life and guided him in all that he did.
Thomas will be deeply missed by those who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet (Conditt) Elfter; his son Nicholas Elfter; his daughter Catherine (Paul) Groth; and his cherished grandchildren Sophia and Claira. He is also survived by his stepchildren Melanie Butcher and James Butcher; his sister Mariana Vavalette; as well as nieces and nephews who held him dear. He was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas George Elfter and Anna (Calamaris) Elfter, and his older brother George Elfter.
Those who knew Thomas remember him as a kind, sweet, and caring man who embraced life fully. His legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and love.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Thomas’s memory.
May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Visitation will be held on April 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation 12001 Wornall Road. After the procession to the burial site, we will return to the church where Makaria Luncheon will be served by the Ladies Philoptochos Society. All are invited to attend.
