Velma was born on June 5, 1933 to Leo and Ruby Hamblin in the small town of Columbus, Kansas. She grew up in Columbus and graduated high school there. She and her mother spent a lot of time walking and seeing nature. She walked to church on Sundays for a blessed filled day. She had the fondest memories with her mother until the tornado on March 15, 1982 came and took her away.
Velma was a hairdresser after high school before moving to Kansas City. She worked for Curry Insurance Company. After coming to Kansas City, she meant Fireman William “Bill” Benthusen. They married in January 1966 in Nowata, Oklahoma. After leaving Curry Insurance she was a stay at home housewife where she enjoyed spending time with her blue healer dog and keeping her yard looking beautiful.
In 2016 dementia took her to spend the rest of her days at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park. She was a very quiet private lady and made the best Pecan pies, although with the dementia she would tell me she never made a pecan pie.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband William Benthusen, her parents Leo & Ruby Hamblin and her brother Gary Hamblin. She leaves behind 8 nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 5, at Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
