

Walter Louis Smith Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a good friend to many people, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at NKCH on March 14, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born to Walter and Marguerite Smith on August 17, 1942, at Parkchester General Hospital in the Bronx, New York, Walter lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a passion for unique pursuits.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. This experience was a time he would refer to fondly during his life. These years of service were a defining chapter in his life and instilled values that he carried with him throughout his journey.
He started working at the Kansas City plant of the Ford Motor Company in the Passenger Paint Department. He was a proud member of UAW Local 249. He loved talking about this time of his life.
During his Ford years his love of commercial fireworks grew as a member of the Jaycees shooting small displays in celebrations with friends and family, to being hired to shoot several professional displays well into his retirement.
Walter was preceded in death by Lucille, the love of his life and devoted wife. Together they built a family filled with love and cherished memories. He is survived by his children: Walter Smith III (Julia), Amy Reeves, and Jennifer Burnett; his grandchildren Walter Smith IV, Buddy Burnett IV, Lexy Pfeiffer, and Jacklyn Burnett; and several great-grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held on March 20, 2026, from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd. A Funeral Service will be held on March 20, 2026, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either St. Jude’s or Shriner’s hospitals.
