

William R. (Bill) Markey, Sr., 91, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty, and children; Kacey (Roger) Hobson, Rich (Patty), Mary (David Holland), Bill Jr. (Carole), Jim (Michele), John (Debbie) and Jill (Mike) Waddle, 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Joseph and two brothers, Bob and Tom.
Bill was born to Leo and Helen (Forbriger) Markey in Independence, MO on February 27, 1924. He attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1941. He attended St. Benedict’s College, Atchison, KS prior to serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. Bill served with the Engineering Battalion of the 8th Armored Division during the European phase of the War. Upon his discharge, Bill attended Kansas State College, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1949. He married Betty O’Brien in November, 1950, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Kansas City, MO. He spent his career in the building and highway construction field, retiring as Chief Engineer of Clarkson Construction Company in 1989. After retirement, he worked for McGilley Funeral Homes for 19 years. Bill always valued highly the Boy Scout program, his Eagle rank and membership in the camping tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in 1976 and was assigned to ministry in the Diocese and St. Catherine of Siena Church.
A prayer service and visitation will be held Sunday, February 21st, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and a Mass of Christian Burial on his behalf will be celebrated on Monday, February 22, at 10:00 a.m., all at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4101 East 105th Terrace, Kansas City, MO, with burial following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Sullivan Center, Benedictine College, or Kansas City Hospice House.
