

Winton Howard "Win" Johnston, 97, of Leawood, Kansas passed away November 11, 2013 at Overland Park Regional Hospital. Memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Lutheran Church of The Resurrection, 9100 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas.
Win was born May 3, 1916, in Lake Norden, South Dakota, and grew up in nearby Watertown, South Dakota. He was the son of Ole and Etta Johnston. Win graduated from high school in Watertown and from the University of Missouri, Columbia with a degree in journalism.
He served in the Army and the Army Air Force Air Transport Command as both an enlisted man and officer during World War II. As an enlisted man in quartermaster, he made Sergeant in charge of a clothing warehouse. As an officer he was stationed at times in London and Paris; h. He was officer in charge of a mess hall that fed American bomber crews at Nutt's Corner in Northern Ireland.
After graduating from University of Missouri, Win spent his career in advertising working for companies such as WHB Radio, KMBC-TV in Kansas City, and KCIT-TV. He also worked as advertising manager for KXTR Radio, and eventually owned his own small advertising agency along with a partner.
Broadcast journalism, big band and vocal music, and travel were abiding enthusiasms. Win was a very positive and outgoing man who had a great sense of humor. He sincerely believed in treating others as he would be treated himself.
Win was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Blinkinsop of Watertown and Edna Wood of Sioux City, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; son, Ronald Johnston (Barbara); daughter, Winette Wisdahl; grandson, Leif Wisdahl of Gainesville, Florida; and granddaughter Whitney Wisdahl Moore (Andrew) of Kansas City.
