Yolanda Barbosa affectionately known as "Yoli" was born to Salvador and Mary (Castro) at St. Mary's hospital in Kansas City, MO. Yolanda was a baptized Catholic. She attended Guardian Angels grade school and Bishop Lillis High School. She worked at several jobs until what she called her real job. Yolanda worked at the KC Star for 36 years. She truly loved her job and all the friends she made at work. After the Star she was sad because she missed seeing everyone all the time. She described the Star employees back in the day as "one big family.” During her tenure at the Star she was involved in many organizations but the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater KC meant the most to her. Yolanda, throughout her life, received so many accolades but her proudest was being chosen Greater Kansas City's Volunteer of the Year. At the Star she received the prestigious Full Nelson Award and the William Rockwell Spirit Award.
Yolanda was a devout Catholic. She received the Kansas City-St. Joseph Bishop's award for her services to Guardian Angels. She was an officer of the church's Altar Society. She took over the annual fundraiser Attic to Basement sale for 8 years. Yolanda was always willing to help out her church in many ways.
Yolanda knew no stranger, her heart of gold encouraged her to reach out to people. One of her many hobbies was scrapbooking. As time went on she grew to love it more. She would work a room full of 100 women to see what they were doing or making and try to get to know each and every one of them. She was just an outright social person. Later in life she gave her all to an organization called PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization). They are an organization that motivates, educates and celebrates women. She was proud to be invited into this organization finally receiving her PIN.
Yolanda was a traveling girl. From many trips with Aunt Nacha to around the world with her sister, Debra. She was always ready to pack her bags for a new adventure. Yolanda was a very caring person, she was sad she never got to see her parents age. So she helped many of her ageing relatives. She would be a driver for appointments or even come and sit for a visit. Her family meant the world to her. To all her friends, know that she was a true gem and your relationship touched her heart.
Yolanda is survived by her brothers Rudy and John and her sister Debra. She was honored to be a godmother to both A.J. Barbosa and Ally Terry.
