

at his home on Monday, the 5th of December 2022, surrounded by his loving wife and
family.
Ed was born and raised in Whiting, Indiana on the 14th of September 1934, to parents
Andrew and Mary Ranostaj. He was a standout basketball player, graduated from Clark
High School in Whiting in 1952, went to Ohio State University on a basketball
scholarship, and graduated with a Petroleum Engineering degree in 1957.
Immediately after graduation, he began his career in West Texas and married his
soulmate and love of his life, Renate Scharte. Together they made multiple moves
across Texas and to Columbus, OH, with 5 children in tow.
A believer and devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Ed attended Memorial Lutheran
Church in Katy. Affectionately known as “Opa”, he set an example of faith and family
for all. He will always be remembered for his unwavering honesty and integrity.
Ed was a passionate family man with many interests - basketball, singing with the
Houston Liederkranz, folk dancing with the Rathkamp Dancers, polka dancing, history
and storytelling, Ohio State sports, coin collecting, and Oma’s cooking. Self-taught
accordion player, he enjoyed entertaining family and friends and playing all over
Texas with his band, The Jägermeisters.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Ranostaj. He is survived by
his wife of 65 years, Renate (Rennie) Ranostaj; his 5 children and their spouses: Terry
and wife Kim, Greg and wife Julie, Scott and wife Tracy, Laura and husband Stephen
Bushong, and David and wife Lisa; 14 grandchildren: Jessica and partner Kosuke
Nakahara, Daniel, Ashlyn Johnson and husband Triston, Denis and wife Elise, Zoya,
Blake and wife Callie, Shelby and husband Austin Jumper, Alexis (Bushong) and
husband Blaine Coutant, Brian Bushong, Katie Bushong, Paul Bushong, Jake and
partner Ashley, Kyle and wife Jennyfer, and Mark; 5 great-grandchildren: Maddox,
Riley, and Cameran Jumper, Cecilia Coutant, and Myles Ranostaj; and 2 more on the
way. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Ranostaj, of Clearwater, FL, and sister,
Martha Ferrara, of Munster, IN, 3 nieces, and a nephew.
The Ranostaj family is deeply appreciative and thankful for the nurses and caretakers
at Memorial Hermann TMC and Real Comfort Healthcare Hospice who took great care
of him in his final days of life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
