Elwood Wayne Huffaker was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada on June 14, 1933, to Marvin F. and Janice B. Huffaker, and passed away on October 7, 2025 in Fulshear, TX at the age of 92. Wayne enjoyed a unique childhood while living in Island Falls, Saskatchewan, where his dad was employed by Hudson Bay Mining. The family relocated to Salt Lake City, UT when Wayne was 14 so that he could complete his early education in a public-school setting. After his graduation from South High School in 1951, Wayne was employed first at Kennecott Copper in Magna and Aerospace Engineering in SLC, where he launched his drafting career, while also taking classes at the University of Utah. He later completed his education at Ventura College. He joined the US Navy in 1953 and proudly served his country in their Reserve unit for the next 10 years. Wayne married Shirley Kellersberger in 1952, and their union was blessed with two sons and two daughters before Shirley’s passing in 1969. In 1955 Wayne joined then Continental Oil Company, later Conoco Inc as a geological map drafter in the Exploration Dept, SLC Division. This was the beginning of a career that lasted him until retirement in 1995. During those 40 years, Wayne was sought after within the Company first as a drafter and later promoted to management positions as he was transferred to Denver, CO; Ventura, CA; Oklahoma City, OK; and several divisions in Conoco’s Worldwide Headquarters in Houston, TX, upon his transfer there in 1986. His mapping expertise and forward-thinking ideas as it pertained to computer technology led to him being involved in many activities in each department.
During his years in Salt Lake and Denver, Wayne explored to a deeper level his lifelong love of sports cars, and became involved in SCCA, first as a driver then the Chief Starter. He never lost his passion for drawing, and created hundreds of colored pencil, pen and ink, and acrylic art, primarily focusing on cars and “automobilia,” and planes and boats to a lesser degree. He was also involved with a marketing team at Conoco, helping to design die-cast models and the box art. He was a Charter Member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, and was the main artist for many years at the “Keels and Wheels” car and boat show in Seabrook, TX. At a few of those shows, he was interviewed and featured for many episodes of the “World of Classic Cars” TV program. After his retirement in 1995, he became very prolific in his artwork and continued to create new pieces until a few months before his passing. For the last 20 years, it was his honor to have his art on permanent display at DriverSource in West Houston, where he also enjoyed many hours looking at the exotic cars and visiting with the Sales team.
Wayne met his wife, Linda née Cauthon Wilkerson, and they were married in 1984. After her retirement from ConocoPhillips in 2010, they made the decision to build a new home in Weston Lakes, just outside of Fulshear, TX and relocating to there in 2013. Wayne discovered his love for dogs when two Maltese, Kami and Moey, joined the family. After their passing, Maisey Rose the Malti-poo mix, stole his heart in 2022. Wayne was quite the fixture in Weston Lakes as he was often seen either walking near their home, or sitting on the front porch with a cute white dog nearby. As their home is on a busy street, he became fondly recognized as “the old guy with the little white dogs!” That’s all you had to say and folks knew exactly who you meant!
Wayne was predeceased by his parents in 1988; and by his son, Gary, in July of this year. He is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; his son Tony (Joy) Huffaker of Sandy, UT; daughters Laura (John) Smith of Peoria, IL and Renee (Klaus) Jensen of Durham, NC; son Brandon Wilkerson of Anna, TX; 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; his sister, Joyce (Brent) Hurst of Caldwell, ID; daughter-in-law Norma Huffaker of Dixon, IL; and Maisey Rose.
Wayne’s Catholic faith was very important to him and he was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, TX. Per Wayne’s request there will not be any public services. The family will gather later in Ponca City, OK where he will be interred at the IOOF Cemetery. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, you may do so to Guardian Angel Catholic Church, P.O. Box 487, Wallis, TX 77485, or to a charity of your choice.
