Hilda Maria Gotera

Hilda María (Guerra) Gotera falleció tranquilamente el sábado 26 de Agosto de 2017, en Katy, Texas, a la edad de 90 años. Hilda nació en la ciudad de Los Palacios, Provincia de Pinar del Rio, Cuba, el 6 de Agosto de 1927, hija mayor de José Tomás Guerra y Amparo Pérez. Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres. Le sobreviven su esposo de 64 años, Osvaldo Gotera; su hijo, Osvaldo L. Gotera; su nuera, Carmen M. Gotera; su nieto, Daniel T. Gotera y esposa Rashi Vats; su biznieto, Rian L. Gotera; su hermana, María Cabezas; su sobrino, Juan C. Cabezas, esposa Rosy Cabezas y sus hijos, David, Daniel y Alexander.

Hilda se graduó en la Escuela Normal de Maestros de Pinar del Río en el año 1947. Hilda y Osvaldo contrajeron nupcias el 29 de Agosto de 1953. Ellos vivieron en Los Palacios hasta que emigraron a los Estados Unidos en 1969 en unión de su hijo. Se establecieron en Chicago, donde residieron hasta el 1992. Después de la jubilación, se trasladaron a la ciudad de Katy, Texas.

Después de graduarse de la universidad, Hilda comenzó a trabajar en la educación pública como maestra de segundo grado en la Escuela Primaria Los Palacios. Hilda Maria (Guerra) Gotera passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 26, 2017, in Katy, Texas. She was 90 years old. Hilda was born in the city of Los Palacios, Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba, on August 6, 1927, the oldest daughter of José Tomás Guerra and Amparo Pérez. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Osvaldo Gotera; her son, Osvaldo L. Gotera; her daughter-in-law, Carmen M. Gotera; her grandson, Daniel T. Gotera, and spouse Rashi Vats; her great-grandson, Rian L. Gotera; her sister, Maria Cabezas; her nephew, Juan C. Cabezas, spouse Rosy Cabezas and their children David, Daniel and Alexander.

Hilda graduated from Escuela Normal de Maestros de Pinar del Rio with a teaching degree in 1947. She and Osvaldo were married on August 29, 1927. They lived in Los Palacios until they emigrated to the United States in 1969 with their son. They settled in Chicago, where they lived until 1992, after which they came to Katy, Texas, following retirement.

After graduating from college, Hilda began working in public education as a second-grade teacher in the Los Palacios Elementary School. In 1948, Hilda and her sister founded the Colegio Academia Luz Caballeros, a Kindergarten to 8th grade private school, which became the preferred choice of many families in the region. Hilda was passionate about education and she dedicated her whole life to advance educational methods for the benefit of her students, who loved her and always remembered her.

With regards to the family unit, Hilda was always a source of pride and inspiration. She never turned away from hard work, even when faced with unfamiliar job options upon arrival to the United States. Without hesitation, she went to work wherever she could provide for her family, even on days when the only form of transportation was walking many blocks in the snow and harsh conditions of the Windy City winters. In addition, she was always there for a consoling ear or a warm meal to lift the spirits of family, friends and even those who she hardly knew.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM, on September 8, at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community, 1530 Norwalk Drive, Katy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
